Almost everyone got this week's newsletter.
I still may have problems from time to time so here is what I have done. Subscribers may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html (.html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 8am EDT, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.
If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more newsletter email.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Security News
From: Internet Scambusters The #1 Publication on Internet Fraud
http://www.scambusters.org
"Hurricane Gustav scams have already begun. According to Computerworld, almost 100 domain names related to Hurricane Gustav were registered by Sunday, August 31, 2008, well before Hurricane Gustav hit land in the US. Although many of these are likely legitimate, many will also be used by scammers. In fact, if Hurricane Katrina and other major disasters have taught us anything, it's that scammers will always try to make some quick bucks while others are suffering. And the bigger the disaster, the more scammers are at work."

"Websense® Security Labs(TM) ThreatSeeker(TM) Network has discovered a new replica wave of fake celebrity news being sent out via spam emails. Similar to previous attacks related to 'MSNBC.com Breaking News' and 'Bogus CNN Custom Alerts ', these emails contain links to a malicious Web page on a compromised site, that is designed to encourage users to download a malicious application posing as a video codec. This malicious Web page also holds Iframes leading to an exploit site.
Over the last few days, the ThreatSeeker Network has seen huge volumes of spam wrapped up in CNN and MSNBC themed templates. Recently, email alerts listing different popular events and news articles also encouraged users to download a video codec, which was actually a malicious file.
The malicious payload is only accessed when the user clicks on! the 'READ FULL STORY' link, which takes them to a Web page on a compromised site named index97.html, which issues a pop-up encouraging users to download a 'missing' video codec, a file called video98.exe.
Here are a few examples of the varied subjects we have seen in this campaign:

Space Weather News for Aug 31, 2008
http://spaceweather.com
Sky watchers across the USA and Europe are reporting unusually colorful sunsets and sunrises. The cause appears to be the August 7th eruption of the Kasatochi volcano in Alaska's Aleutian islands. The volcano hurled a massive cloud of ash and sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere; high winds have since carried the aerosols over parts of the USA and Europe. "Violet domes," long pink rays crossing the sky, campfire-red aureoles around Venus--these are just a few of the sights documented on Spaceweather.com in recent days. When the sun goes down tonight, look west. You may be in for a treat.
Ongoing coverage of the phenomenon may be found at
http://spaceweather.com .
