September 19 2008 COOLSITES Newsletter #183 by Mark Donaldson
Almost everyone got this week's newsletter.
I still may have problems from time to time so here is what I have done. Subscribers may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html (.html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 8am EDT, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.
If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more newsletter email.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007
http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes
"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Space Weather News for Sept. 18, 2008
http://spaceweather.com
DOOMED SPACECRAFT: Jules Verne is about to become a fireball. On Sept. 29th, with NASA aircraft looking on, the 22-ton European spacecraft will plunge into Earth's atmosphere over the south Pacific Ocean and harmlessly disintegrate. Jules Verne recently spent five months docked to the space station where it delivered supplies, used its engines help the station avoid a piece of space junk, and served as an impromptu bedroom for the ISS crew. Mission accomplished, the doomed spacecraft is now making its final orbits around Earth glowing about as brightly as Polaris (the North Star). US and European observers are favored with flybys this weekend. If you'd like to see Jules Verne, check the Simple Satellite Tracker for viewing times:

Excitement
What an exciting year this turning out to be.
What an exciting presidential election we are having. It is even more exciting than the 92 election with Ross Perot. A new deal, new direction, reform, straighten out, change, etc.. I've heard it all before and nothing ever changes in DC. Why? , the person does not run the office, the office runs the person. The president is the administrator of congress's laws. The only power the president has is the emergency powers. I want a president who will be strong against our enemies and not show weakness. Clinton showed weakness when he had Bin Laden in his sights after the World Trade Center garage bombing and failed to pull the trigger. I blame Bill "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton for 9-11. I keep on hearing my father say "salesmen, prostitutes, politicians, they're all the same animal. They will say anything to get your money". Don't get me wrong, I love America. I think it is the greatest, freest, most prosperous country the world has ever seen but it has problems. The problem with our government is it is an out of control, a giant money grabbing monster that takes more than 70 cents of every dollar you make,,, either directly or indirectly via taxes. The only way it will change and become the small non-intrusive government, our founding fathers envisioned, without bloodshed is if everyone, every business, corporation, retailer, etc. agreed that they will no longer collect or pay taxes. Too bad Ron Paul didn't get support but the monster wouldn't allow it. Tax Revolt, Tax Revolt, Tax Revolt!
What an exciting time for our economy it is. Mortgage bailouts, financial institutions collapsing, insurance companies going bust, stocks falling, precious metals rising, two hurricanes shutting down our gasoline supply and creating shortages, the big three automakers on the verge of bankruptcy, airlines and aircraft manufactures in trouble. Just one more punch, like a major earthquake, might push it over the edge. 1830, 1880, and 1930. We had depressions every fifty years until the FDIC was created. Now it's been eighty years. The end of the arms race in 91 meant no more spending trillions on those stupid nukes, just billions, but now it looks like the race might be back on with Russia testing a new sub launched ICBM. The Gulf War in 91 meant the military would need to replace the weapons expended during the war and money would flow from the government back into the private sector. And the internet would be a new economic opportunity. I said in 92 that the economy was going to enter a boom time and whoever took office would take credit for it, and Clinton did. The problem is we are no longer a manufacturing economy. We are now a service economy. Panama is a service economy and they make their money servicing other countries. We are making our money servicing ourselves. That's like the snake eating it's own tail. Sooner than later there will be nothing left of the snake. The blame game is already starting. If the economy tanks then whoever gets elected will be blamed for it. Blame Game. Blame Game. Blame Game.
What an exciting time it is for sports. The Olympics showed we still have the best athletes. The Cubs may break their hundred year drought and it might be a subway series with the White Sox (lucky Chicagoans) but I want the Cinderella team, the Rays, to play the Cubs whose magic number is now two. The Yankees won't be in the post season and Torres's Dodgers might. That will stick in Steinbrenner's craw. A fan at Yankees stadium on Tuesday caught a home run ball in the right field bleachers. On Wednesday the same fan caught another homer in the left field bleachers. I calculated the odds of that happening at around the same as winning the lottery. The Farve saga and so much more. Go Cubs Go. Go Cubs Go. Go Cubs Go!
What an exciting movie Dee and I saw this week. It is "V for Vendetta". It was excellent and didn't follow predictable story lines. It wasn't gory. It wasn't filled with foul language. The acting was superb. We've been talking about all week. We recommend this movie. See this movie either on TV or DVD.
