This is a plausible, well documented analysis but it appears to overlook the other culprits in the MS monopoly. Thousands, more likely tens of thousands, of managers in government and business habitually take the lazy way out in procurement by specifying brand name solutions instead of performance and result requirements. If you always ask for Kleenex (tm) instead of tissues, you should not complain if that is what you get.

How many MS licences are for government agencies around the world? If governments' policies dictated that portability and interoperability were to be non-negotiable requirements for all software procurement, the successive monopolies of WordPerfect and MS Word would probably not have arisen. (Anyone remember Word Star?) I think that government and business must accept a large part of the blame for enabling the MS monopoly. Love them or hate them, Microsoft must be acknowledged as masters at exploiting the laziness and incompetence of their customers.

Over the years, I've bought brother Bill several new cars and made a few house payments for him as well.
I remember when I could buy the latest upgrade to MS-DOS for $10.
Now the cost of MS software borders on the ridiculous!!!!

He gets richer and I just get poorer,,
so now I look for FREE options, to buying any software.

FREE is good! FREE is the American way. Wink
