On my wife's log in to our XP Home machine she gets lots of error messages saying a script error has occurred, with no information and "yes" "no" buttons that don't respond.
It only happens in her log in and it seems to occur with all sorts of sites, as well and some programmes too. (including the user account app in control panel)
It even happens on the MS help pages.

When I look for it on the web I find other people seeking a solution, but not any solutions that work for me ( or many other people).
I've disabled script debugging. It didn't help.
I know that killing the MSHTA process will kill the error message, but that will still not allow the script to run.

PS. Although there are many mentions of this around the web, the replies and suggestions are all different and most seem to suggest that a specific programme that the person asking has on their machine is to blame, but it's always a different programme. Some say ThEy have NORTON so a reply will tell them that it's Norton. Another will say it's FLASH and so on. Almost all the threads seem to end in giving up!

Hello,

Does this only occur when your wife logs into her account on the computer, i.e., does the computer behave normally for other users?

Have you tried following the steps outlined in Microsoft knowledgebase article #306891, "Error Message When You Browse the Web: An Error Has Occurred in the Sc...t on Th"? If so, what difference, if any, did that make?

It's only on my wife's log-in, which is an admin log-in. I set mine up first and then hers, so hers is a second log-in ( actually a third because my first attempt to resolve this was to create a new one for her).
All the mentions of this on the web are clear about it being the subsequent log-ins and the original one being fine.
I've done some of the things in that link, such as reinstalling the Java VM, which was he last resort in that article, and as noted, I turned off the script debugging etc. To no effect.
But none of it is really relevant to this issue of the first installed log-in working fine and the others not.
I do know that this seems to be an IE7 problem.

Hello,

Have you tried changing the privileges on your wife's account (both increasing and decreasing them)? If so, did that make any difference?

Just wondering as you believe the issue is IE7 related --- are you using a shortcut icon for IE, and if so, have you tried starting IE from the program menu? I recently had a similar situation on another computer and found the shortcut had become corrupt. Just a thought. Good luck.

The various posts seem to think tht IE7 has caused this and some say reverting to IE6 cures it. But as with all the post on this subject, there is no consistent solution. And it happens whether or not IE is in use. Anything that needs a script, including the MS website shown in my screen shot, even in Firefox, and the control panel routine for changing users.
And then the message you see in my example will just sit there stopping anything from happening.
Maybe reducing the privileges of her log-in may help. I'll give it a try. Maybe updating stuff as part of SP3 will help(?!)

Now here's a thing.
I found out that I wasn't able to install SP3 either. (Access denied). I tried several times and it ran almost to the end, then aborted and uninstalled itself
The MS website suggested that the Subinacl programme and a list of registry entries needed to run first, to change some sort of permissions.
I ran most of that, but then had to stop, it was getting late. I didn't even consider trying the SP3 again.
On a quirk berfore I switched off I decided to check to see if it had helped the original problem, since it seemed somewhat similar. And it had.
My wife has her open e-mail link and everything working.
And then today I installed SP3 fine as well!

I don't know how it worked, I don't know what it did. I don't understand anything.
But hey -it worked. Laughing
