Schieffer: Paulson Pleaded for McCain to Save Bailout

Only four of them held up their hands. Paulson then called, according to my sources, Senator Lindsey Graham, who is very close to John McCain, and told him: you've got to get the people in the McCain campaign, you've got to convince John McCain to give these Republicans some political cover. If you don't do that, this whole bailout plan is going to fail. So that's how, McCain, apparently, became involved. Continued Schieffer . . . SCHIEFFER: He has gotten what he wants, he's going to have this meeting, kind of a summit today with the president and Barack Obama. I'm told that the leaders of both parties are getting close to having some kind of a bill. The question, though, is whether rank-and-file Republicans, especially, are going to vote for this. And that's where McCain comes in.

So, will everyone now quit claiming this was some kind of "scheme" by McCain, or that his move was a "stunt"?

No.

No...

Because McCain didn't have to do it the way he did it. He'd said earlier it was best to leave the two presidential candidates out of it, as they'd politicize the process and turn it into political photo ops.

What he could have done was just pick up the phone and call Lindsey Graham and tell him to tell the Republicans opposing the plan to get on board and pass the darned thing.

But he didn't do that, did he? No. Instead he makes a multitude of grand announcements that he's:

suspending his campaign (which didn't happen),

rushing back to Washington (which didn't happen)

even if it meant postponing or not showing up for the debate (which didn't happen),

and staying there until the bill is passed (which didn't happen and so far hasn't happened).

So, regardless whether or not Paulson pleaded for McCain's help, McCain did turn it all into a scheming stunt.
