I just bought a Sandisk Cruzer 4 Gigabyte thumb drive. When plugged into the USB port of 3 of my computers, it acts fine, and everything seems to work. However, when plugged into my newest and most powerful computer, the Cruzer light flashes, and continues to flash forever, and the computer essentially locks up. I tried disabling the "U3" on plug in function in one of the computers it works in, but the problem persists when plugged into the main computer.
All computers are running WinXP SP2. The one where it does not work has an AMD processor, and 2 gig of RAM.
It does this on both the motherboard USB port and the PCI USB port. I have a Lexar thumbdrive and that works fine on this computer.
Can you all think of some Windows setting/service that may be interfering with recognition/operation of the Cruzer?
thanks |

Hello,
Have you made any attempt to determine the circumstances under which the computer locks up?
Does the problem occur if you plug the Sandisk Cruzer 4GB USB flash drive into the computer before powering the system up?
What about if you logon using different credentials?
Regards,

Bern,
I have the same Flash drive, and an AMD processor and 2 gig's of RAM.
NO problems with that Flash drive here, or on any other PC that I've tried it on.
It's more than just likely that it's some setting in your Bios or in Windows itself. Compare your bios setting regarding USB, with another computer where the FD works.
Also, it just may be the U3 thing that's mucking up the works. I always remove that from every flash drive that I buy.
Just a thought,

Do you have Admin. privileges on the non-working PC. U3 tries to install a virtual CD drive on the computer and if the log-on account does not have Admin privileges it cannot load. That is why U3 equipped USB drives seldom work at public libraries or schools. |

JFYI..... At the Sandisk web site you can download a U3 removal too.
U3 is worthless to me, so I remove it.

It was, in fact, the U3 thing that was mucking up the works. Now, is there any way I can ensure privacy of data on that Cruzer? U3 seemed like a pretty good way to do that. |

Remove the U3....it has very little to do with privacy.
Cheers!

Had the same problem here, worked fine on 2 other PC's (older ones) and my newest it wouldnt (all XPsp2+updates)...
It seemed like it could not install the drivers for the initial recognition of the drive. Upon insertion it would say something like "device detected" then just lock up the whole PC requiring a reset button (ctrl/alt/del didnt even work). I noticed somewhere in all the discussion i read that it worked for some people in "safe mode" and not in a normal boot. And that solved it... not just in safe mode, or using safe mode to fix it and do all sorts of crazy stuff, it just works now... so... very easy...
1) To boot PC in safe mode, at the start of the boot up hit f5, select safe mode at the top, ignore the rest...
2) once it finishes booting and
3) yes you are sure you want to run safe mode
4) stick Cruzer in USB... pop ups for new device recognized etc etc etc, your drive is now ready to use...
5) eject, unplug, reboot as normal
6) ... it works! (?why?) but it just did. It 'aint broke no more so i wont try fix it...
at least in my vast sample of 1, it worked for me...
p.s. and then using my computer|manage|disk managment i changed the drive letters so the small U3 partition was "U" and so the data partition was the same as i'm used to with my other drives "H". Just make sure you are changing the correct drives!
Typed from firefox for U3 on the previously troubled PC |
