Ok, so I've got a fried desktop with lots of files I would really not like to lose. I was on thinkgeek.com today and found an ace little device that I thought might solve all my woes.
It arrived today and like a little kid on christmas I immediately upon arriving home scrambled directly to the 'ol busted up puter to test my new gadget.
Got the old hard drive out, plugged it in, connected the USB, booted up my laptop, and boom...
There are all my beautiful folders!!! It worked great! Now... time to copy them all over to my laptop hard drive.
Wait.. what's going on? access denied??? WHAT??????
KHAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN!!!!!!
*ahem*
Sorry.
So it appears that the files are protected on my own hard drive...? Anyone have any ideas about how I can access and copy these files?
Cheerz! |

Apparently you have to "Take Ownership" of those files.
You didn't say what OS's are involved here.
What OS is on your new computer and what OS is on
your old hard drive??
Regardless, you still have to become the master (owner) of those files.
I'm testing Windows 7 on a separate hard drive and it wants to lock me out of almost everything. So on the Windows7 forum I found a neat little program that adds the option to "Take Ownership" in your right click context menu.
All you have to do is find a folder that you want to work with, in windows explorer and right click on that folder and then just click on "Take Ownership" and you become the legal owner of that folder. Then do what you want with it.
In Win-7, I've taken ownership of almost every folder, including \Windows.
Ok, so where do you get the "Take Ownership" program?
Well, I've taken care of that too. You can download it here:
http://www.box.net/shared/l1b7hmpyh6
After clicking the above link, you will be taken to MyBox.net
You will see a button labeled "Download (660 Bytes)
Click that button and download the file.
Run the program file just once, to put "Take Ownership" into your Right Click Context menu.
You May need to reboot your PC to activate this feature. (?)
I've used this little program (registry script) on XP, Vista and Win-7 and it works just great.
Good Luck recovering your files.
The Doctor
PS: Now you know all about computers crashing, so once you have your files recovered, burn them to DVD's for permanent safe keeping.
You'll be glad you did. |

Hi Dragon,
I too had this problem. It seems XP respects the security
of another system. Linux does not. I use Puppy Linux
to handle these situations. Copy files I want to any drive,
internal or external, or flash, even burn to cd.
Puppy operations like drag and drop a little different
from Windoz, but easy to learn. Drives must be mounted
first, but in Puppy you do this by single click on drive
icon on desktop. Left button drag from source to target,
and you get a choice between move and copy.
Use copy for now. Puppy iso around 100 Mb
www.puppylinux.org There are other linux distros
which will do this, but none as easy to use as Puppy.
Best wishes, zzron |

ok, so couldn't get the iso to work right, and the "take ownership program" was just a registry thing and didn't do anything that I can tell....
however....
I did a search on microsoft help for "take ownership" and it brought me to the following website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
that had a step by step guide to taking ownership of files.
This worked like a charm.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!! |

RE-Read my post.
I did state that "Take Ownership" is a registry script and that all it does is put the line "Take Ownership" in your 'Right Click Context Menu'.
And Yes, I also stated that it works for XP.
Did you right click on any file or folder, after running the registry script?
As I also said, you may need to reboot your system before this feature becomes active.
If you found a work-around that works for you, that's great.
But "Take Ownership" works very fast when you need to take ownership of some file or folder and is practically a "Must Have" for people (tech's) working with Vista and Windows 7.
Thanks for posting back that you have a fix for your problem.
Cheers Mates!

Hi Dragon,
"could not get iso to work"
The puppy iso must be used to create a cd using
"burn image to cd" assuming you have a cd burner and
burning software. If not, ask a neighbor to do it for you.
The cd is a live cd. In bios, be sure boot to cdrom
is selected before hard drive, then boot cd and run..
Once running, all drives should visible. Click once to
open (mount) each drive you wish to use. Practice a
bit with drag and drop to get used to it. Left button
drag, when you drop you get choice of move or copy.
Choose copy.
Best wishes, zzron |

drwho07, does the take ownership work on both Home and Pro versions of XP?
I was reading about having to boot into safe mode in home and login with the admin account; seems like a lot of work so this will solve a major problem. |

Z,
I don't use XP Home. That's a real piece of crap!
But why wouldn't it? XP is XP after all.
I've used "Take Ownership" on XP-Pro, Vista and Win-7.
Once installed, it only takes two mouse clicks for you to become the OWNER of any file or folder.
In Win-7 I just took ownership of everything to save time later on.
Take ownership of a large folder like \Windows, and it will take a few minutes to complete, but then all those thousands of files are YOURS..... and you never have to jump through all those hoops to do it the M$ way.
I read the full page (plus) of instructions of how to take ownership of a file, Microsoft's way and it was enough to give me hives!
Why go through all that BS when just two mouse clicks will give you full ownership of any file or folder in your HD????
For the life of me, I don't understand some folks predisposition to do everything the long and hard way. (the Microsoft way) ???
I'm outta hear!

Hello,
XCACLS, the file and folder permission changing tool, works just fine under Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledgebase Article #825751, "How to use Xcacls.vbs to modify NTFS permissions."

Thanks AG. My husband is currently using an XP Home computer I got free. I resuscitated it from death. The owner was ready to throw it out. He did throw out the keyboard, mouse and power cord! I brought it home, cleaned it up physically and of excess crapware, put in a new power supply and a 1GB stick of RAM. The only thing I bought was the RAM, everything else was spare parts. So for $30, he has a "new" computer. XP Home might be crap to some but it works very well for what my husband needs to do. As a bonus it came with WordPerfect Suite 11 installed. Since my husband prefers this to Office because he has used WP for years and knows it much better, this was perfect.
I'll be pulling his 2K computer off the internet when MS stops issuing security patches. I thought I'd have to buy him a computer and a newer version of WordPerfect because I'm pretty sure the old version he's using won't install on a modern OS. |

Congrats!
When I'm installing new computers for my customers, I often get the old ones, just to get them out of the customers homes.
It's amazing, what I can do with a derelict PC.
One Dell, had ten bulging and leaking capacitors on the mobo. That was causing all sorts of misc. problems.
I replaced all the Bad Caps and the little computer took off and ran like a champ.
With more ram and a new PSU, it runs even better. I've since donated that little PC to a worthy cause.
I took back a computer I built in 2000, with Windows ME on it. Except for a noisy CPU fan, it still ran ME just fine.
After a overhaul of the fan, a new PSU and some more ram, I installed XP Pro on it and it's running like a new computer. Not lightning fast, but pretty good none the less.
So with a few dollars and a little imagination, old computers can once again have a new life.
So what's new? I suppose more cores in the CPU and even faster HD's.
SATA III anybody?

When you boot from a BartPE disc, you can access files regardless of ownership.
You can then copy them to USB flash drives etc.

Well, that's kind of the same thing, when you boot with a simple DOS boot disk and run "NTFS4DOS". That will give you full access to every file on an NTFS hard drive,,,,,,, and all from an old fashioned DOS prompt.
It absolutely don't get no easier than that. !!!!!
But then, if you never bothered to learn DOS, you're back behind the eight ball again. Anyone considering themselves as a computer expert should at least understand DOS. It's as basic as it gets.
(Like, every true American, should understand English)
Anyone just too lazy to learn DOS, shouldn't be fussing around with a computer in the first place. Because DOS is the basic language that every PC understands.
Wanna talk directly to your CPU, , , talk to it in DOS. Then it will understand everything you say.
Just a thought.
Happy Holidays!

I downloaded this program and ran it on my desktop with Vista 64 and it installed and runs great, however, when I tried to run it on my laptop running Vista 32 it just opens up the notepad program and shows it as a text file without installing.
Do you have any idea how I can get it to install?

Going all the way back, past the topic hijack, "What's Next?".
Well, we've already seen an increase in the number of CPU cores, and we've seen the introduction of Solid State Hard Drives.
Clock speeds are ever increasing too.
Motherboards are now available that don't have those leaky capacitors on them.
MSI is quite proud of their new mobo's with new Space Age capacitors, that can't leak and ruin the mobo.
It just gets betterer and betterer!
