Ok well I'm a noob here. Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place to post this.
Well the problems all started back in april when Brandon (my boyfriend) moved into a new apartment. Charter came in and hooked him up. But about a week later he lost net they come out and reworked the wires and got him all set up. About another couple weeks after that he lost net again. They came out and fixed it with the wires. Then a week after that he lost the net again and it turned out that his ethernet card had crapped out. So he got another one. Of course he lost it again and had to replace the modem because it died.
He lost net yet again...
This time charter made him wait nearly a month before they came over to even look at his problem because they didn't beleive him. They said everything looked perfectly fine on their end. He called them back again and talked to another person about it and they said in the records it showed that he was losing packets more and more. Until his connection was nothing at all.
Now he has a very slow connection and not much of one. He's able to go to google.com but it takes about 10 minutes for it to load up. Forget about logging on yahoo or aim or anything like that. About once a week aim or yahoo logs him on he sends me a msg or 2 and by the time I respond he's booted right off.
So last saturday Charter went to his place and rehooked all of the lines went up to the modem and it still didn't fix the problem. So one of the guys plugged this device thingy into the modem and he said the modem was showing a regular connection and that it's his computer thats having the problem.
So he reinstalled the drivers for the ethernet card, moved the ethernet card to another PCI slot that he knows for a fact works, he's even tried formatting because the charter guys suggested it might be a virus or some other corrupt file.
Nothing worked.
He's still without internet and we have no idea wtf is going on. He's going to be getting yet anothet ethernet card and see if that is the problem and of course if that's not the problem we have absolutely no idea what to do.
Please someone ANYONE help!
Thank you so much for any ideas or suggestions they're much appriciated.

Hello,
Do you have a seperate computer such as a notebook which you can temporarily connect to the cable Internet connection from Charter? If so, does that perform slowly as well? If it does, then the problem may still be with the cable connection--just because the signal on the cable is strong doesn't mean it is good.
Regards,

No there's no other computer he can hook up and check. Is there anything else he can do to check or have charter check? Whenever he pings charter.com it times out along with any other site he tries to ping. I don't know much about that stuff(I mostly just know hardware lmfao) but I've read that when that happens it means your computer not just your ISP. I'm not sure if this means anythign or is important I just figured all the more info the better.

| Search for and download winsockxp fix & run it. Winsock is needed for every connection to the net and sounds to me like that is your problem. |

Welcome to the forum.
I would try the winsock fix as mentioned by 'rebootbill', it's worth a try:
LINK
If that doesn't work, then your next best suggestion was from Aryeh. Hook up a laptop to the connection to see what happens. If you don't do this, Charter will continue to blame your system and provide very little assistance is getting the problem solved. By using a different computer, you will be abl to prove that it's their system that is having the problem, and not yours.
Someone, family, friends, co-workers, neighbor.....has to have a laptop you can can use.
Best of luck in getting the problem solved. |

Thank you for welcoming me.
And thank you everyone for all of the advice. I'm downloading winsock xp fix right now and will get it to him.
If that doesn't work we'll find some way to get another computer to his place. I'd take mine over there but he lives incredibly far from me at the moment.
Thank you again guys so very much if anyone has anymore ideas hit me with em.

Uninstall any network device.
Reboot the system WITHOUT a NIC.
Reboot with new NIC...
See if that doesn't fix internet connection slowdown...
Also, IF you have any Intenet Security prgs installed, "Symantec, or McAffee", REMOVE em, and try again...
They are notorious for boluxing up your internet hookup, expecially if you use WiFi....
Good luck!
