LOS ANGELES — Rock the Vote is turning 16 this year, but the birthday for the organization that has used Madonna, R.E.M. and other music stars to get millions of young people involved in politics is shaping up to be anything but sweet.

The nonprofit group founded in Los Angeles in 1990 is $500,000 in debt and down to just two employees, from 20 in 2002, according to tax documents and Hans Riemer, the organization's political director.

That's a shame - I hope they can come back. I disagree with most of their political views, but not the basic concept of getting young people to vote, which they did pretty well.

It sounds like a very worthwhile cause.

Anything that gets people out to vote is alright with me. Elections in this country tend to be decided by far less than the majority of eligible voters. Its sad because so many I have talked with feel their vote doesn't count so they choose not to vote or they feel all politicians are crooks and choose not to vote at all, or they are content to let someone else decide their future.

One thing I would like to see added to every ballot is a "No Confidence" box, that way if the majority of voters have no confidence in either candidate the election can be scraped and others can run, I think this would happen a few times before parties adjusted themselves and people would be more inclined to vote if that option was available.

I would like to see the electoral vote be done away with. Let the people decide with their vote. Then it would mean more.

I read a little about how that system works, normally they follow the popular vote. I believe there has been once in our history where the Electoral College has voted the opposite of the popular vote. (I can't remember who though.)

This site has some interesting reading about the electoral college (and presidential voting in general). They have pages about disputed elections (there were more that I thought), and a description of why we have the electoral college, and how it works. THE bottom line is that the electoral college is not going away - it gives more power to smaller states, who aren't going to vote to get rid of it.

Another intersting site is this one. It has information about "faithless electors."
