For those who are considering a change in their operating system, here's a comparison test done by someone who used Mac OS X for one month, then Linux for a month, and then Windows XP for a month. Worth reading if you're interested in the pros & cons of each system, and how they compare against each other:

Windows vs. Linux vs. OS X - Introduction
Quote:
John Halamka has a penchant for experiments with new technologies. In 2004, the now 44-year-old CIO of the Harvard Medical School and CareGroup, which runs the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who is also a practicing emergency room physician, was one of the first people to have an RFID chip containing a link to his medical records implanted in his body (it's near his right triceps.) Next April, he and Harvard geneticist George Church will become the first humans to have their DNA sequenced and their full genetic makeup posted on the Web.

But as a health-care administrator, he's not solely interested in testing the cutting-edge, Orwellian technologies that make headlines. The PCs inside the hospital have to work too. So when Halamka's laptop running Windows XP interrupted several presentations with inopportune antivirus and application updates, he decided his next big initiative would be to determine which desktop operating system—Windows XP, Apple's OS X or Linux—is the most secure, most reliable and easiest to use in a corporate environment.

For three months, Halamka ditched his Windows laptop. He replaced it first with a MacBook running OS X. Then he spent a month using a Lenovo ThinkPad X41 running a dual-boot configuration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation and Red Hat Fedora Core. Finally, he took up a Dell D420 subnotebook running Microsoft's Windows XP. After evaluating all three to determine which worked best for him, he plans to begin testing his preferred setup with users, most of whose desktops currently run Windows.

Halamka judged the three operating systems according to a variety of criteria including their performance, user interfaces and enterprise management capabilities, such as the ability to configure applications, easily organize file systems, and establish granular security control. We followed Halamka's progress, and now we have his conclusions. We've also ask three other experts to take a look at Halamka's findings and add their own insights. (continued)

Wait until April - Linspire and Ubuntu have joined forces. Click-N-Run technology should make life easier for all.

CNR makes updating Linux even easier than Windows. Plus it's going to be FREE ! Very Happy

Have fun. Just make sure you bookmark the user forums - they will provide invaluable advice if you get stuck on something.

Ubuntu certainly is popular these days. I'm running Mandriva, but I thought I might install Ubuntu alongside it. Linux Magazine had a Ubuntu DVD enclosed last month, but it came into my newsagency on off-pay week. Usually there's still a couple of copies of Linux Magazine on the stand 2 or 3 weeks after they come in. But the Ubuntu edition went in less than a week & I missed out on my copy.

Irea the article and it pretty much matched my assesment.

To be honest, where I work Windows doesn't give us much trouble with lockups, crashes and the like. We use brand name hardware (HP/Compaq) and I'm sure that's a contributing factor. Drivers, BIOS, hardware, etc are all tested together.

I've liked Mac for a quite a while now. Even when G4's gave me trouble, you gotta love a company that uses "Zap the PRAM" to describe a fix. Hated PageMaker though -- the number one troubleshooting step was "reformat the hard drive and install only pagemaker"

I'm still giving Linux a whirl. On my desktop at home (Suse10), one of hte first things I did was try to play a DVD. No go; and surfing the 'net looking for all the software that's supposed to be out there for Linux didn't get me too far. In fact, for this particular instance, the site that I did find that looked like they could help me had notices like "use of this software might be illegal" and "download and compile this, but it's still flaky unless you have version xxx.y build z of <insert modules names her>. A regular home user doesn't want to see that.

Yep - that's the major issue with Linux - playing files which use Windows codecs. Still, you might want to look at the Penguin Liberation Front. I can't imagine too many people being prosecuted for playing on their PC a DVD that they have legally purchased. If anything, I wonder if DVD manufacturers could be prosecuted for 3rd-line forcing. You shouldn't be forced to buy a Windows operating system just to play a DVD or CD. They should be operating-system independent.
