Put all porn in .xxx domain: US senators
March 17, 2006 - 10:35AM
Two US senators on Thursday proposed legislation that would establish a new ".XXX" domain for racy or sexually explicit websites.

The bill proposed by senators Mark Pryor and Max Baucus, both Democrats, calls upon the US Department of Commerce to exclude sexually charged content from established website domain names such as .gov, .com, .org, .net, and .edu.

Baucus said at a press conference that the .XXX domain would help parents use filtering software to keep children from accessing pornographic sites, and would help prevent hapless Internet users from inadvertently stumbling onto sexually-explicit websites that they would prefer not to see.

"While the internet is an exceptional learning tool, it allows children the same easy access to websites about space shuttles as it does for pornography,"

said Baucus, adding that violators would be subject to a hefty fine.

"This bill will section off a piece of the Internet neighborhood and confine adult sites to one location," the Montana senator said.

"It will give parents more tools to protect our kids. Parents should not have to worry about their children surfing into websites for adults - either on purpose or by accident."

Might make it easier to find. :w00t:
I really don't think it could be done. All P2P would have to go to a .XXX site. But then half the stuff isn't porn. Think fileshare, Rapidshare and others. If you upload files to save, then you would have to navigate .XXX to get to it. kinda defeats the purpose.

Shades of "free speech zones".
I seriously doubt the U.S. can dictate policy to foreign domain registries or the ICANN.

ICANN tried this a few months ago and it was beaten down by right wingers who felt it was a license instead of a corral.

Link to John C. Dvorak's commentary.

The other question is: what do you classify as porn? Every country has varying levels of censorship & classifications. What may be rude in some countries is not in others. Another example: would a picture of university/college students "mooning" at a party require a site to change to .xxx?

I think the law would be impossible to police.

As a single, adult male I will offer my services to patrol the border should they decide to enact this legislation. Cool

No and no.

Read the Dvorak commentary. They are talking about a dedicated domain for porn purveyors.

Ebaums World would still be a .com.

Some of our politicians have a knack for making laws that are impossible to enforce. :whistling: :w00t:

Count me in too. I think between the lot of us we could do a good job of weeding through it all. Of course we are doing it to protect everyone but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make! :w00t:
