It's strange,,,,,in most any conversation about CPU's there are only two brands mentioned. IBM and Cyrix are both out of the race, so all we hear about is Intel and AMD.

I've recently become aware of one more player in the processing game....
"VIA".

Here's a site where you can read all about it.

http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/processors/c7/

The low cost "Everex" computer now being sold at Wal-Mart stores is based on this low cost, low power CPU.

Hello,

Cyrix merged with National Semiconductor in 1997, who, in turn, sold their x86 CPU core intellectual property to VIA in 1999. VIA also acquired Integrated Device Technology's Centaur Technology division, which designed an x86 CPU core called the WinChip. These processor designs were the basis for VIA's C3/CoreFusion, Eden and C7/D/M processors, which are mainly geared towards embedded systems or design solutions requiring ultra-low power/heat systems.

The footprint of the new VIA chip is tiny compared to an Intel.
Is this chip socketed or soldered directly onto the mobo in Everex's new system? Question Question Question

Hello,

From looking at this product sheet for the VIA C7-D, it appears the processor uses a ball grid array, so it must be soldered directly to the motherboard, like the memory on a graphics card.
