I changed the name of a folder on my site plus the name of the photo and I have a friend who claims the old link still works when mine stopped working the instant I changed the name. What would the explanation be for this?

The paged could be cached, either on their own PC, or possibly on their ISP's server. Have your friend clear the browser cache and then try the link.
