| I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but here goes. There is a 15 MB file I'd like to have sent to me and need to know how to accomplish that. This is a data /program file and at that size my ISP would probably deny it thru OE. So I thought about peer-to peer and also thought about spyware, virii etc. Is P2P the way to go? Any safe? Or is there another way?
I could download this file normally, but it is only a part of the whole (89 MB) file and it would take 10 plus hours on my dial-up connection. So I had someone else download it and am trying to avoid a 200 mile trip.
Thanks,
Charred

Allo Charred
There are 'fileshare' websites availble that will let you upload and share files for free Link...
I dread to think how long it will take to upload 15 MB on 'dial-up' though

Gmail's attachment limit is 10Mb so I suppose ordinary ISP's don't allow anything larger.
You could use any number of file splitter programs to break it down into, for example, 3 5Mb files.
I used one called hacksaw a while ago that worked pretty well. |

Thanks for the responses.
I'm going to try Megaupload first which was suggested by Werebo. If there is a problem with that, and I do not anticipate any, I will then try Webb's Hacksaw program with Gmail.
Upload is not the problem, Bo, it's my download @ 28.8.

EEEEKK!!!
It makes me shudder, remembering how slow that is...
Still, at least you'll have plenty of time to make a cup of tea while you wait...
Might have time to grow the tea too...

| Here is a concept. You are trying to avoid a 200 mile trip. Can't someone burn this to CD and *gasp* use postal mail? |

That is a rather unique idea. Now, I have to try to recall just what this postal mail thingy is. :hmm:  I should try that mail? thingy along with the 28.8 download, just to watch the two collide.

Get with the program nlinecomputers, will yah??
Cool peeps share their thumb drives in the 21st century!
Using CDs are soooooooooo gauche! :harhar:
There is a new breed of software (which I have not tried it) that advertises to be able to send over 1GBytes files over a regular POP3 (errr.... SMTP) server! Next time I run across the name, I will post it but it looks like a cool solution but only if it was free.
There is nothing wrong with any of the FREE server offerings on the market:
*MegaUpload
*RapidShare
*SendSpace
*Verzend.be
*Uploading
*Uploader
*UploadPort
... are but a few of the FREE servers available for such transactions.
Some of these provide upto 1.2GByte uploads.
Please remember that there are rush-hours and peak times when not to use these free services.
The above statement applies to both the uploading, as well as downloading of packages!
But I would most definitely recommend that you prevent scripts (and pop ups) from running your system afoul while using any of these services.
Pappy always used to say "There ain't no such thing as FREE lunch"!
Then, if you are looking for something to learn or a challenge: You can always get involved in the P2P community, by turning this package into a "torrent" and uploading it using a BT client and get involved in the BitTorrent community!
None of the foregoing is to be construed as any type of endorsement of the above information! :hmm:

Hello,
A USB FLASH RAM disk key would be another way to transfer the file, would probably cost about the same to ship as an optical disc, be less vulnerable to damage via bending during transport and also be re-usable by the recipient. On the negative side, they are more expensive than optical disc media.

Is this suggestion over and above the method recommended here:

www.dropload.com
What is Dropload?
Dropload is a place for you to drop your files off and have them picked up by someone else at a later time. Recipients you specify are sent an email with instructions on how to download the file. Files are removed from the system after 7 days, regardless if they have been picked up or not. You can upload any type of file, mp3, movies, docs, pdfs, up to 100MB each! Recipients can be anyone with an email address |

I think any service that requires you to furnish someone's email (yours or that of someone you know) address is an invitation for spam and other nasties.

A lot of good ideas here. Keep 'em coming.
We are in a waiting period at this point since my son is out of town on business--returning Saturday.
