| hey guys,
I am trying to access a shared folder on a windows 2003 server with a windows 98 client. When I try to access the server I get prompted to give a password. I tried entering the administrator's password with no avail. I am working with windows 2000 pro and windows XP machines and they are able to access with no problems it is just the windows 98 machines I am having a problem with. Can somebody tell me if it is an authentication problem or what I need to do in order for me to access with a 98 machine?

If you are running Active Directory you need the Active Directory client for Windows 98 installed.... You can find this on the 2003 Server Cd.....

I ran into this the other day, 2K to XP. I just typed the user name and password for the 2K box. Of course, I use the same name/password on just about everything, so it could be the name of the 98 or the XP that should get you in.
Another way to get the file where you want it is to 'push' the file from the XP unit to the 98 using the XP box's keyboard/mouse instead of 'pulling' it with the 98 machine. It's not elegant, and you shouldn't have to do it this way, but it gets you the file... |

When it asks for the userid & password, add the domain name.
Example:
Domain Name\Administrator
Password |

Check to make sure the user account on both machine are identical including passwords. I run into this problem a lot with 98 and XP. Passwords in particular may only be case different but that is all it takes.
Good luck |
