Quote:
Update | 4:55 p.m. President-elect Barack Obama has selected Leon E. Panetta, the former congressman and White House chief of staff, to take over the Central Intelligence Agency, an organization that Mr. Obama criticized during the campaign for using interrogation methods he decried as torture, Democratic officials said Monday.........

Quote:
Mr. Panetta has a reputation in Washington as a competent manager with strong background in budget issues, but has little hands-on intelligence experience. If confirmed by the Senate, he will take control of the agency most directly responsible for hunting senior Al Qaeda leaders around the globe, but one that has been buffeted since the Sept. 11 attacks by leadership changes and morale problems............

Bad idea Sad

Yeah, what's up with that? I know his views are the same as Obama. He used to be a Republican so maybe that will help but, he has no intelligence experience.

That was my first thought but, I'm not so sure that this is the position for an "outsider".

maybe it will be an outsider that has the ability to look inside
they do not carry the baggage that most of the others have to carry …

As Clinton's budget chief, he sought to cut the CIA's budget and clashed with then-CIA director R. James Woolsey.

That's your opinion. It's been my experience that spooks work best with spooks and this guy is no spook.

As budget chief I would hope that he would attempt to cut a lot of budgets. I'm not sure I'd hold that against him. It was his job.

My biggest concern he has no intelligence experience and Langley has never done well with an outsider running it. As much as it makes me sick I have to agree with Feinstein.

As a budget chief I would applaud his efforts. As the future head of the spy agency he sought to take funds away from and limit the power of and as an outsider to the agency which by its very nature and function is an inclusive club that likes to keep its secrets close I'd consider it a very bad career move. And bad news for our intelligence community as a whole.

George Bush Sr. had no intelligence experience when he was picked to run the agency. So were a few others who were successful in the position.

I heard that this is not a done deal and he hasn't been officially nominated.

If you want to get some insight into what might be going on with Panetta, (and Feinstein) try these links. Yes, some of you won't like the site (msnbc) but the Rachael Maddow interview with Bob Baer, a former CIA agent, does provide some more information on Panetta's qualifications.

Other than showing that he is highly qualified to dismantle and destroy the CIA I didn't see anything in that article that would change my mind about his being a very poor choice for CIA chief. Its unfortunate because he will likely set the CIA's ability to do its job and once again make it impotent after it was beginning to recover a bit. Just another poor choice by an inexperienced president elect.
