Hi,

I have HCL beanstalk pc with windows xp service packs 2 installed in it, its specs are as follows:

80 GB Hard disk
256 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 Procesor
CPU 2.8GHZ
3 1/2 Inch floppy drive
DVD writer

somedays ago the problem that i had with my pc is that it gets restarted itself when i am working in a program and even at when the cpu is booting it makes a noise as though an airplane is flying above my head.

I have checked the two cooling fans they are working properly.

i have removed one of the rams(i have two 128 mb ram)
then the problem seemed to have diminished but now the problem has recurred, i have only one ram 128mb. what do i do. i tried starting pc in safe mode but even then in the safe mode pc gets shut down by itself i m really stuck!!!!!

i have taken the cpu to three maintainence engineers but in vain. i cannot afford to more bucks on this!!!!!

my pc is only two years old i have used it very little (i have used only 5gb of my hard disk)

PLZ help!!!!!!!!!!

Hi and welcome! Does the noise happen all the time or only when it reboots? The noise would be something mechanical, either the DVD, the hard drive, or a fan. Have you tried leaving the cover off, and try to locate the noise that way?

From your description, I would lay money you have a HD that is going out.
My suggestion is to ghost it IMMEDIATELY. (clone to another HD - same size or greater)

The sound you may be hearing are the heads - or chattering from trying to read bad sectors. - but since I can't actually hear the noise, I could be wrong. But do you really want to take a chance with your data?

BTW: hard to believe your "maint guys" didn't think of this...

Allo Khushee and welcome to Lockergnome Forum

To (hopefully) find out why your PC keeps rebooting itself, right click the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop and select 'Properties'. From the box that appears, select the 'Advanced' tab, then click 'Settings' in the area marked 'Startup and Recovery'. In the lower half of the next box, there's a tick-box marked 'Automatically Restart', untick that box then OK everything back to your desktop.

The next time your PC plays up, it should display an error message onscreen and stop at that point' If there's any error messages, post them here (along with the numbers) and we can try to help cure that bit.

As posted above, any strange PC noises must be mechanical (moreso, if the speakers are turned off Wink).
Fans can still make grungy noises, despite still working. So, as Trackerbill mentioned, remove the cover and take a close listen to them.

If not the fans, all that's left is the drives. Taking note of Tux's suggestion, backup your drives immediately, then from Windows Explorer, select the drive in the left hand pane, right-click and select properties. Click on the 'Tools' tab then select 'Check Now' in the 'Error Checking area. On the little box that appears, click the 'Check Now For Bad Sectors' then Start. (This can take some time to check, so if you have a good book, or some TV to watch, or whatever.... Wink)

If your HD is partitioned into 2 (C: + D: ) do this for both drives. This isn't guaranteed to stop all HD noises, but if there's any bad sectors on the drive, this should cure most 'chattering' noises.

Failing all that, it's very possibly the drive bearings are worn, which is irrepairable, other than by a replacement drive Sad.

RE: the aeroplane sound.

Check your DVD writer and see if you have inadvertently left a disc in there.

Good luck.

Thanks, Werebo, for going into the details that I failed to mention (was getting late for me)

I recently had a drive that I was trying to install 98 on & it work fine up to 90% installed. Then the heads started clattering something fearce. Ran a sector scan & cleaned it up. Took a good chunk of the HD (more than "I" wanted anyway) but was usable for what I wanted. & there is no noise so they CAN be "FIXED" in this sense.

BTW: I was assuming only one drive in the machine. So yes as Werebo said, you will have to determine which drive is bad if there is more than one. Simplest way is (with power off) unplug the power one at a time & boot. same will work for checking the fans. (don't run very long, though)
{need any details on this - please ask}

Thought of this but ruled it out by the way I interpeted what he said but...
It couldn't be that simple, could it? (I re-read & will stick with my thought of the HD)

I must agree, it seems unlikely to be a CD/DVD drive, they only (usually) make noise when in use. The hard drive is constantly running, so is most likely to make a constant noise (other than the fans).

I assumed 1 drive in the PC too, but possibly partitioned into 2 drives Wink

Hello,

You may wish to test the computer's memory with all memory modules instealled using a program such as Memtest86+.

Also, try running the computer with the case off to see if you can further identify which component is creating the noise you are hearing.

I have a homebrew PC with a DVD writer also. If I leave a disk in the DVD and restart, It makes the noise you describe everytime on restart. When I remove the disk, the noise stops. I think it is checking to see if the disk is a startup disk and when it decides it is not, the light on the DVD writer goes out ant the noise stops and I can remove the disk.

Hi,

I tried removing the cpu case and switching on the pc but still its goes and restarts itself indefinitely. When pc gets restarted, the intel processor IC get heated up very much. The cpu is in nice ventillated place.

I have also tried unchecking the 'automatically restart' option but still it gets restarted automatically. I have not been able to know the exact problem. I will make it a point to note the error message with its corresponding number the next my pc allows me to do so. (it is not getting booted )

I have not been able to access anything as my pc gets restarted even before booting itself. Hopefully when i am able to login i will try 'check for the bad sectors' option and the memory test.

The noise is continious slow at first and increasing its intensity.

We have internet connection.
earlier i had etrust anti virus software (when i bought the pc)
then i got my pc formatted and the anti virus software then was avast i suppose the version was 7.0
Now at present the anti virus software is Kaspersky antivirus.

What do i do my doesnt even boot now!!!!!!!

Plz help me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello,

Could the heat sink fan/combo have slipped off the CPU so it is no longer making good contact with the top of the CPU?

Khushee,

Is the processor heatsink clean? if there is dust buildup in the fins, it won't cool well as the air cannot circulate. If necessary, get a can of compressed air and blow out the fins. PC's need to be dusted out now and then.

Does the PC finish the POST before it reboots? In other words, does it get the single beep before it reboots? If you get anything other than the short single beep, it is detecting some kind of hardware problem.

Does it start loading Windows at all?

Another thing that comes to mind - there are capacitors scattered around the motherboard. They are the little metal cans with a layer of plastic on the outside, and something like an "X" stamped in the top. Do any of those "X"s look like they are bulging?

I don't know if you are still following this but I have extensive knowledge about the PC you mentioned. HCL NEO, or beanstalk or as it is referred to in the USA the Gateway 610XL. The most common problem with this PC by far is the insufficient power supply the manufacture provides. I have seen problems ranging from flickering screens to the computer randomly rebooting, speakers cutting out and peripheral devices acting strangely. Every time I encounter one of these machines it is always a different problem but the same solution. The power supply. 180 Watts just is not enough for this machine. However, since the power supply is proprietary to this machine simply purchasing a new one is not that simple because a standard ATX power supply will not fit in this case. If you would like some more information about this computer please respond here or email me at 4nik8r89.RemoveThis@gmail.com. I can help you install a new power supply and can make some good recommendations for replacement equipment or assembly instructions.

Digging up "bones"?

After almost 2 years, it is a safe bet that he may have "junked or parted it out " by now.

With so little ram and that psu problem, I'd be junking it for sure!

Yeah, with a two year old thread, I too would have to assume that the owner of that PC has made some permanent repair or disposition of that PC.
