Paranoia
In the old days, before modern electronic communication, when there was just the telephone and post office it was uncommon for the average person to be subjected to a scam. Con artists and flim flammers (remember the movie "The Flim Flam Man" with George C. Scott. If you don't then see it.) plied their trade in person. Now every person with a criminal bent is doing it electronically. You can't trust an email or phone call. Sometimes you can't even trust postal mail. Be paranoid. be very paranoid. Paranioa is good for you. If someone contacts you from The IRS, FBI, Court, Bank, etc. asking for your personal information (name, address, SS#, bank account number, etc.) don't give it to them. Ask them for their name, title, phone, address and company/organization and tell them you will call them back. Then look up the phone # in the telephone book to call them back. If the call is legit then you will be able to contact them. If they are a scammer then they probably won't give you the info and hang up on you. And if they are a scammer and gave you the info then you won't be able to contact them at the place they said they were with and can report them.
