Besides not even spelling Baghdad right do people really fall for this stuff? What keeps 'em trying?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attn: Pls
I am Mrs Hasim Al-kamil woman bassed in bagdad in
iraq,i got your contact from a friend of mine one
time resident in your country,it is with that i wish
to contact you for a little assistance you can render
to me.
Due to the situation here in in iraq, those of us in
the business circle are finding it very difficult to
cope with the situation here,no stable goverment, bomb
explotion at strategic places every now and
then, sometimes people find it very difficult to go
about their normal businesses due to fear of being
victim of terrorist attack, above all.the crisis in
iraq now has made business activities totaly
parallised for quite sometime now.for intance,no good
telephone facilities,no adiquate security,infact,all
most all the basic infrastructure were destroyed
during the recent war in iraq, ever since then .the
enveroment in iraq has never been condusive business
wise.
Please, why i need your assistance is that i have about
(us$ 40.000.000)fourty million united states Dollars
in my custody.i inherited the money from late my
husband who was a major general in iraqi army in
charge of purchase and maintainance in the immediate
past regime.
My intention is to move the money out of iraq and
invest the money in stock market or real estate in
your country with the help of an honest person who
will work with me as my foreign associate, i want to
invest most of the money abroad to avoid lossing the
money, because it is not wise doing business in the
atmosphere of fear here in iraq, that's why i am
calling on you.
If you can honestly collaborate with me ,i am ready to
pay you up to 20% of the total amount if you can
sincerely assist me to actualise this project
soon, because the situation here in iraq is very
critical, the everyday bomb explotion seems to have no
end.
I wait patiently for your urgent response.
Mrs Hasim Al-kamil
Best regards |

| People are ACTUALLY falling for this.
I saw a special on TV about it and there really are people who fall for it... and not just a few.
These letters use to come in the (snail)mail, but for some years now you can get them in your mailbox.

And these guys who set up the spam messages use all sorts of ideas and seem to be very creative when they (re)write their spam that is going to be sent out to (a lot of) people. I remember once that people like this used a very known reiki organisation and claimed that they had a reiki firm in a South-African country and had to flee because of local rebelions and militia...
They were using this name without any permission and with only 1 reason: to find people who buy into these things and get robbed. A little bit more critical thinking and listening to your own intuition can help you a lot.
But I know from personal experience that intuition is hard to understand and listens to.
If someone could give me tips on improving listening to myself or enhancing your intuition (true advice, no spam advice or advice on a "professional" page or book reseller), mail me! |

Yes  I think they come in all types - pardon the pun !- In NZ we get them too, so I have this little letter which I paste onto theirs and send it back. Seems to work, as I have VERY FEW now, whereas at one time there was two or three a week.
robbiej . p.s. DO NOT SIGN IT....
I have forwarded this e-mail to our Fraud Investigation Dept & Police
Dept.
of our Government, as I consider, and I think they will too, that is an
effort to extort moneys for illegal gain.
Through modern technology -this Department has the means to trace
international e-mail, and IF this is found to be an illegal ellicit for
moneys,- in our Country,- you will be hunted down, procecuted, put on
trial, and will have a sentence of not less that 15 years HARD LABOUR in
an International jail.
I strongly suggest that you re-think sending out these pleading letters,
unless you wish this to happen to you. |

I forgot to say -
That I set up an e-mail address. fraud.police RemoveThis @gov.co.nz .. so you would have to do the same.
It will come back to you as 'not known' - but that does not matter. The recipient will get the message ! |

I too have received requests of this type. To Sgt Schultz, I think the poor spelling and grammar is done deliberately to give the impression of a foreign national who is not used to using English, giving credence to the request. To Robbiej, I sometimes reply, depending on my mood. The replies I send range from 'do you really think I am so stupid I am going to fall for this f@*?!ing crap? P*?ss off you twat and annoy somebody else'! to something along the lines of your excellent response, except I warn them I will refer them to 'the appropriate officials, including but not limited to law enforcement agencies.'
Again, I do not receive many now, in fact I have not had one for many months, suggesting that these requests are sent by a small number of criminal organisations, who soon get the message.
I have to add, anybody who falls for this type of scam deserves to be robbed, since they are most likekey motivated by pure greed which shuts off their common sense! Measure these and other attempted cons by the maxim 'if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.'
By the way, can anybody lend me a fiver? (ha ha, just kidding!) |

I get a lot of these as well. I just delete them. Some of them are so bizarre I wonder if they're using this to set them up! |

I get them on a regular basis at one of my Yahoo email addys. Never bother replying or anything, they now are automatically put in my junk mail folder which just gets emptied.
I don't bother with them anymore.

Just FYI, these emails have migrated again. Once they existed solely in snail mail systems, then they moved to the email and became spam. Now, personal experience has shown a new face of this particular scam: IM conversations.
I had a conversation with someone that very nearly read this script word for word. Of course, having seen the stupid email dozens of times, recognized it for what it was immediately. |

Reader's Digest this month gave me this wonderful webpage to mock the scammer. Check out the Trophy Room... |
