Obviously I have NET Framework installed. I have an update for
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)

It will not install. I have tried from the yellow shield updater and from Microsofts website but it will not install. It says some updates could not be installed.

How do I get this security update to install on my computer? Or do I need NET Framework and it can be uninstalled altogether?

Hello,

Which version of Microsoft Windows are you running, and which versions of .NET Framework are currently installed on those computers? Knowing that might be helpful in further troubleshooting the problem.

Regards,

.net Framework is now up to version 3.5+

I'd not be messing around with ver. 1.1

I carry 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 on my update CD and install them in that order if I come across a PC with only 1.x installed.

Many programs that we rely on require Dot Net Framework to be installed first, if those programs are to run. It's like a programming language that many programs today are dependent on.

See if you can download 2.0 and install that first.

Cheers!

werebo, what is the number on that patch? Are you running 2k, XP or Vista?

You do not need .NET 2 unless some program complains.
One of my computers has .NET 1.1 and whatever patches and service packs go along with it. Another computer has >NET2, simply because a doc to pdf program I use required it, otherwise I would not have installed it.
Doc, be careful with .NET 3.5, MS has been screwing with installing addons and plugins into Firefox without your knowledge and making it susceptible to security holes.
It started way back in February 2009 when FF was still at v3.

I ran across this a few weeks back. Might be of some use.

Quote:

.NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide

Introduction

This .NET Framework cleanup tool is designed to automatically perform a set of steps to remove selected versions of the .NET Framework from a computer. It will remove files, directories, registry keys and values and Windows Installer product registration information for the .NET Framework. The tool is intended primarily to return your system to a known (relatively clean) state in case you are encountering .NET Framework installation, uninstallation, repair or patching errors so that you can try to install again.

If you are running XP, download dotnetfx.exe from MS and run. After that normal update will be able to run. Most likely your netfx.msi is corrupted.

I installed 953297 in Ocober on two XP computers.
mommabear's link points out a blog about using the cleanup tool that jeff552004 mentioned in his post. There are downloads scattered over the internet but you never know how clean the download is.
I try to get from the source, in this case MS, I think this might be the cleanup tool to run
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A4EFC33-0343...E4-B0C4

then go back and see if the update will install.

If it doesn't, post back and we'll do a bit more searching.

Code:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A4EFC33-0343-4EE4-B0C4-97BD16967A09&displaylang=en

Uninstall Cleanup Tool for the .NET Framework 1.0 and .NET Framework 1.1 updates KB928366, KB929729, and KB928367

The forum trunctes the link; it works for me but not all computers operate the same.
I put it in a code box so it would not be truncated.
Simply highlight the link and press ctrl+c to copy it and paste the link using ctrl+v into the address bar of your browser.

wenbo, scroll to where it says Files in This Download
The links in this section correspond to separate files available in this download. Download the files most appropriate for you.
The last download x86 means a 32 bit version.
Computers are called 286 (ancient), 386 (old) and 486(newer) so all 32 bit (and even 16 bit) are designated as x86, meaning it will work when you replace x with 2, 3 or 4.

zlim, it won't work. All I get is a quick flash of a black text box, guessing it's something I'm supposed to type into but it won't load. Now what?

I don't know how the download is supposed to react. Maybe the cmd prompt (black box you see) popup is normal - I just don't know.
Have you gone to the windows update site again to see if the update will now install?

I knew it was a cmd prompt but couldn't remember what it was called, DOH.
I just tried again and I get the same message that it wasn't installed.
I have updates set to tell me when new ones are available and I download them first then install what I want/need. The shield keeps popping up and it's the same thing, the SP1 for .NET.

I don't know what to do to get this critical update to install.

Not sure what all you've tried, so forgive me if I'm re-inventing the wheel here. But I DO believe that the .NET stuff can be gotten separate, possibly at another site (M$'s or some other)& installed that way.

I am a level 3 & have been for quite a while so I don't remember what all I had to do. I DO NOT use the auto update (had to many machines totally bust) & I only update what is absolutely needed.(the old adage, if it ain't broke...) So, you MIGHT want to consider that if an app or program isn't saying "I need that to function", just to forget it all together. (just my opinion, your mileage may vary)

Start here
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx
and download the Net framework cleaning utility.

It will list everything you have installed, I think.

If it does, try removing just .NET 1.1 SP1
Next to reinstall that.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8f5654f-088e...b2-bbdb

Next head to windows update, let it scan your computer and see if the patch is offered.
Crossing fingers to hope that this will fix it.

Guess I don't have to worry now,my computer crashed!

Stupid thing wouldn't reboot or shut down. I shut it down manually and on restart all I got was a Windows screen instead of a welcome screen.

Tried a system recovery and when it was done all I got was like a cmd prompt screen with NTLDR is compressed, press CTL+ALT+DELETE to reboot. Did that and all it does is cycle back.

Sent it to my tech guy so hopefully he can get it up and running. Good job I have the hard drive cloned on an external drive!!! Although I haven't done it for a while so I'm sure there will be some music that I've lost and hopefully can get back

Good job I've got a nice neighbor who lends me her laptop if I need it Very Happy
