A bizarre situation has arisen recently, here's the thrust of it.
I right click on an file, picture, utility and slect `save target as' and as usual select my desktop for the download area. (I have tried plenty of other directories, but it's the same everywhere) the dialogue box appears with a progress strip, percentage download etc, all as usual. `Close Dialogue when finished' is left unchecked, so in theory when the downloading is finished I should be asked what action I want to take.
No, the dialogue disapears and no file is present ANYWHERE ON MY HARD DISK. - not temp, not nothing.
Dowloading a big file for a test, I minimised everything so I could watch my desktop. VERY briefly and icon of the mp3 appeared on my desktop, where it should and then disappeared.
I will be 60 in 9 days, so it's possble I am going mad already. Any Help PLEASE?

Hell, I'm already there! Browser =?, Open instead of Save =?
Have you tried doing a "search", just in case it's going elsewhere? If it did or didn't, I think there is more going on with your system!

| If your using IE, try using FF or another browser. It could be a glitch in the browser. |

Thanks. Yes I can download to desktop using Firefox.
So IE is the issue. - I guess. So now starts the process of finding what it is. (Nothing against Firefox, and no great loyalty to IE -but I'd prefer not to change)
Being British and nearly 60 it's near my bed time. So I'll flush my cache etc and clear all temps and run a virus scan, spyware scan, worm scan etc. and check back tomorrow.
Thanks all for your help so far |

Allo Toddzbox
Have you checked the Under the Security tab on 'Internet Options' (Control Panel)??
If you select the 'Internet' icon, then click the Custom button, there's quite a few options about saving files etc. It's possible one of them is mis-set :hmm:
When/where's the B'day party???
Hehehehehe.....

You could try looking at it's log, it could be "disinfecting" your downloads. |

I've checked the log of onecare and found nothing. Then did a test download and refreshed the log and found nothing. I stopped the OneCare service did a test download, nothing.
I also viewed event viewer in Admin Tools (There's an abbreviated OneCare log there by the way) nothing visible at time of test download, or even near.
ZLIM Thanks for the Tip on changing default download directory in the registry I shall check through the registry.
I really thought I was on to something with Oncare as there was a coincidence of dates with my last downloaded file, and a OneCare download.
I have checked through the security section of IE.
When my wife asked me what I wanted for my 60th birthday, I replied `Brewery'. So we are going to North Yorkshire to a village called Masham, which has two breweries.
I have left a post on the ONECare site, but will manage for now by using Firefox for dowloads. For non UK residents there is a beer at this brewery that's called `old peculiar' I'll try that and see if 8 pints of that help.
Thanks all. I'll start a new thread on my return. |

One last post...
I did a file search by date on the pc, and checked files/folders changed at the exact time of download and found only two - fairly obvious - my download folder of choice, and Temp. Baffling. |

The antivirus thing was just a shot in the dark.
It's one of the few things that can delete a file without asking first and leave very little trace.
Enjoy Masham, it's a fine place for a day out.
(Try the "Double Chance" finest beer in the whole town...) |

For all those who contributed to my earlier post , and those that might in future suffer the same issue the resolution was:
Totally uninstall all Norton and Symantec products using the tools on the Norton website
"Using the Norton uninstall tool
Situation:
The Norton uninstall tool uninstalls ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006 products from your computer. It also uninstalls Norton Ghost 10.0/9.0/2003.
Solution:
To use the Norton uninstall tool, download and run three files, then reinstall your Norton products."
FYI I had installed NAV but traces obviously remained.
Thanks again
