Shadow helped me with a Ghost boot CD, and I now have a question about it. He doesn't seem to be posting any more. Anybody know how to get hold of him? |

Bring up an old e-mail from him - and PM him. Or address your questions to Dr. Who. |

I'm sure the shadow would tell you what I will tell you and that is that Ghost 2003 or even Ghost 8.3 (2005) will NOT work with Vista, on any brand of PC.
It doesn't have the capability to copy the new type of boot sector that Vista uses. (that's as close as I can come to an understandable explanation)
It will make a Ghost backup image, but when that image is restored to a new HD, the drive will NOT boot up. So that makes it pretty worthless.
I've personally spent hours and hours working on this problem and so far I have NO solution, using Ghost 2003 or Ghost 8.3.
I've been playing around with Ghost 11 too, but still "NO JOY".
I've heard that Ghost 14 is supposed to be fully Vista compatible, but I don't have a test copy, yet.
Cheers!

I'm showing my ignorance here again as I don't have a machine available to run vista to find out these thing, but isn't there a way to repair that "boot sector"? Like you would an MBR or ever the boot stuff in linux (GRUB & LILO)? I would think there would be. Real bummer if there isn't as I can see this being an IT nightmare. |

It's simply another case of an OLD program that cannot deal with a new OS.
Nothing new....been going on for years.
Even thru XP, we didn't have to fix the boot sector if you just use the "Disk TO Image" backup, followed by an "Image To Disk" restore. That worked perfectly to rewrite the entire boot sector properly, and the HD would boot.
Never use the "Partition To Image" option when you want a Backup Image that will restore to a blank HD (and make it bootable).
There's something different about the Vista boot sector that the older versions of Ghost just can't handle.
Give it up with the "maybe this or maybe that".
It just won't work!!!
If you want to continue to use Norton's Ghost, you'll have to use a later version, that was made especially to work with Vista.
That will have to be some version after 11.0.
I've tried that and it won't work either.
Cheers mates!

| I wasn't really referring to ghost, just wanted to know in general if there was a fix for that being broken as I can see it possibly getting broke in other ways, too. |

In XP you can boot to the recovery console and use the fixmbr (fix master boot record) and fixboot commands. I just removed Vista from my dual boot setup and used those commands to remove Vistas boot loader and restore XPs. I have the recovery console installed as a boot option so it was a relatively easy fix. |

Yeah, I know that, (thus the original question) but what about in VISTA? Seems like there should be a way under it too. (I assume the same thing?) I've heard to just rebuild it if this happens (LINUX too) but forgot the procedure & tools to do it under M$. - recently had to tell someone about linux
Dang memory (or is it that "old age" thing again?) - actually, I have fibromyalgia, that affects my memory at times.(among other things) - it switches on & off at times, causing a total blank. - real ***** at test time. But I STILL managed to pull off a 4.0 GPA. |

I don't know if you can do it in Vista, only had it running for 30 days. I only booted to it two or three times to help my father with some vista problems on his new laptop. I suffer from fibromyalgia too, so I can relate. My memory problems are from all the pain meds I've been on from time to time for chronic back pain. Mostly short term memory lose problems for me. |

Sounds like we need to create an "Oldtimers Forum".
I just turned 65 last Sunday, but don't feel a day over 30.
Thank God, so far I've still got most of my faculties. (most anyway)
It's becoming one of those, "the mind is willing but the body is weak" sort of things.
I'd still like to do all the crazy things I did at 30, but my body says,"are you out of your freakin' mind?!!!"
I'm currently wiping my Vista HD to remove all formatting, boot sectors, etc.
When I'm sure it's as clean as a new born babe, I'll reinstall Vista and start my explorations with Ghost again. Nothing is permanent on that PC as I'm using it only as a test machine, like a PC in a Computer Class room. It may get wiped and reinstalled many times over the next few months.
So far, I've attributed most of my problems on that test computer to the fact that it's a D'hell !!!
Ok, Old Timers, I'll catch y'all later,

Mrs WereBo has sometimes been heard to mutter that I'm 21 - with 33 years experience at being 21!!! My excuse is that it was a good age, so I'm experiencing it to the full |

Hello,
I have used Acronis True Image 11 with Microsoft Windows Vista without too much trouble. The last time I used it I was switching hard disk drive technologies and capacities and had to boot from my Windows Installation disc--I believe it did not create the Boot Configuration Data correctly. In any case, it took under a minute to fix after booting.
If you would like to try something else, here are some other programs you can try: Link1, Link2
Regards,
