I installed the fix-it centre in the hope that it would fix my perennial problem ( - that .msi installers won't work in my log-in. But do in my wife's)
And of course it wouldn't install in my log-in, but did in my wife's.
There was no reason. It just told me it had failed.
So I installed it in my wife's log-in.
And it ran. And offered to check everthing that is already working fine, but, hey, there's nothing there about installer problems.
So I clicked on the link for other problems.
And there was still nothing. Or a way to make it search for the problem. Nor any new way to find anything.
So it's not a very automated fix it centre.
In fact I can get much better help here. Embarassed

I recently had a problem (on a friend's computer) where the DVD was seen in Device Manager but not seen in My Computer.

After some Googling for an answer to the problem I wound up downloading a Fix-It program from Microshaft. After running the program the computer would no longer boot up. Vista repaired the problem itself so I didn't have to resort to restoring a Ghost backup image file (which I had previously made).

Well, that's the last time I trust MS to fix any problem.
I actually found a fix on one of the other help forums, involving a registry hack.
Just five minutes working in the registry and I had the problem solved.

Hackers=1, MS=0

So what's new? Laughing Laughing Laughing

I actually like most of what Microsoft does. But it sometimes seems as if tehy don't talk to each other. So the support people aren't actually sure how the software works.
Which may also explain why help files sometimes don't even mention the function that I've struggled to use.

I've always been tempted to just remove HELP from my computer, because I've never had it actually Help me. I've heard enough people say the same thing so I'm pretty sure that it's not just me.

I Google a lot, not only for myself, but to attempt to help others. Whenever MS is one of the things that Google comes up with, I just move on to the next item down the list. ( I hope that made sense )
Because like you said, "The left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing, or has done".

Everything within Windows itself, was written by the same group and all seem to work pretty well, like System Restore. It does work and I have to use it about once a week to fix some little glitch or another.
And, the Vista/Win-7 repair feature seems to work, as I mentioned earlier, but it's all a part of Windows itself, not some add on program written by a different group.
Maybe they outsourced their Fix-It programs to India? Eh?

Windows 7 was supposed to be the OS to end all OS's, with fabulous stability, security, etc, etc, etc.
So, go to any of the (several) Windows 7 forums and just read the tons of complaints about BSOD's, stalls, lags, crashes, etc. etc, etc.
It's a freakin' MESS!!!

In most cases, the problem is in the seat in front of the keyboard. Rolling Eyes
But without some serious effort, Win-7 is not the perfect OS that MS claims it to be.
I can't stand it unless I run the "Classic Shell" program and a whole list of registry tweaks.

Before this becomes (another) rant, , , I'm outta hear!

Cheers mates!

Google is the best help you can get for any kind of problem.....not only with computers.

I drive a Suzuki SX4 and I've found two great forums dedicated to the little car.
It's nice to chat with people who share your interests.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The three possible exception to this are,
1.) the "What does the third item on the menu actually do?" type questions;
2.) the sort of questions that get you nowhere in Google because there just isn't a precise enough query, that doesn't have lots of generably applicable key words in it.; and
3.) you don't know what the item is called, but you do need to use it Sad
