I recently visited my local Aldi's discount grocery store and found the Medion Akoya's desktop computer for about $500.00. I am not sure about the Medion computer manufacturer, I think they are from the U.K., but I think that the computer is a very good price @ $500.00. If anyone knows more about the Medion computers, by all means let us know. I do know that the company did receive an award from PCWorld.

Hello,

Medion is a German consumer electronics company that sells computers as well as appliances. Since Aldi is German, too, it is not too surprising they are importing Medion computers. The Akoya line incorporates many desktop and notebook units, so I am guessing the one Aldi selling is the Medion Akoya E5300 D Multimedia PC, since it is the only desktop I could find around $500.00 on Aldi's US web site. The specifications can be found here on Medion's web site.

It sounds like a decent computer for $500.00. It is interesting to note they use an AMD Phenom triple-core processor and not the more expensive quad core model, and provide only 3GB of memory. The latter makes me suspect it is shipping with the 32-bit (x86) version of Microsoft Windows Vista, which is a shame, since it would probably run the 64-bit version well and could be expanded with more memory.

From what I understand, their desktops are are comparable in build quality to Dell and HP/Compaq and their notebooks to Dell and Toshiba. Not having ever seen or used one, though, I am only going by what I have read online.

Regards,

Aldi has just built a new store in a nearby town.
I was used to seeing Aldi stores up north, but this is the first one I've seen in FL.

I've not been to it yet, but I'm wondering how they incorporate Computer sales into a grocery store? Would that be somewhere between the green beans and the canned corn?
Or maybe in the candy isle! Laughing Laughing

For a first time computer user or someone on a very low budget, I've been recommending the "eMachine" with XP installed, on sale at Wal-Mart for $289.

The last one I installed, just last week, was a "Mini" Desktop, with XP Home, 2 gigs of DDR2 ram and a 200 gig HD. I think it also had an AMD processor.
Most of what I remember about it was that I could easily hold it in one hand and it was very "Quick". After I got done installing my own tweaks and twiddles, it ran even better.
I also noticed that it was made in September 2008.

So, for the bargain hunter, there's still some good deals out there.

My only concern about something made in Germany, would be where would you get warranty service? (unless you live in Germany)
Just a thought.

Cheers Mates!

Out of curiosity, I did some Googling and came up with this site.

http://aldi.us/us/html/offers/2867_6150_ENU_HTML.htm

They are not saying anything about accessories, like a keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. that normally come with other brands like 'eMachine'.
It's obvious that there is NO monitor, like that which comes with the $500+ systems from Acer, eMachine, and other name brands.

It might be a great little computer as a replacement tower, but having to add another $300 worth of hardware to make it usable for the first time buyer would be a big minus to many users.

Cheers Mates!

Apparently Alda plans to go head to head with Wal-Mart.

The next question, of course, if one needs service, will Alda provide it oor will it need to be shipped to the Manufacturer??

A word of warning!

If you go grocery shopping at Aldi's.....take your grocery bags with you.....they don't provide them!

And...don't look for brand names. Other than the candy bars, there are none, at least none that any red blooded American boy would ever recognize. Wink Laughing Laughing Laughing

So if you're into bagging your own purchases and don't mind "Brand X" foods, shop till you drop!

Happy Shopping!
