Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Strange Problem with Gmail
Mick Combs writes:
Every time I try to use gmail to contact you, gmail exits when I start typing! That's why I have to use my regular Outlook Express to contact you. Win XP SP2, with all updates. I even tried to use gmail in I.E.7, same thing! Is there a "glitch" in gmail? I don't have any problems with gmail, except your account.
I wrote back with some suggestions and here they are along with Mick's responses:
That is the strangest "glitch" I have ever heard of. Click "Settings" and then "Filters" and check there. Also check all of your setting.
Filters are clear - never used any
One question: when you say "gmail exits when I start typing" are you talking about typing in the address box, subject box or the compose field.
As soon as I hit ANY key on the keyboard, I get "FireFox must exit" error. I also note that the little green bar in the status bar stays 90% until I hit a key, then it shows "Done" and the error pops up!
I don't normally use gmail, so I don't know how long this has been occurring. I have any received gmail linked to O.E. so I only go to gmail occasionally to delete spam! I belong to the local "FreeCycle" group (which uses gmail), and just receive mail through my linked O.E. I just tried a different person, and FireFox error'd right out! So it's not you, it's a problem with FF.
He solved his problem.
My problem with sending you e-mail with gmail, is due to a conflict with FireFox. I changed my default browser to Internet Explorer, opened directly into gmail, and (as you see), gmail works fine. If I open gmail direct with my default browser set to FF, I get "dumped" as soon as I type anything! Maybe FF 3 will clear this up!!!
I told him to contact Firefox and here is his response:
This seems to work using original (old) version! Here is their response to this problem:
"It's a known issue with Gmail and their engineers are working on it. Their suggested workaround is: Please try logging in to your account through our secured interface, available via
https://mail.google.com. Be sure to use this exact URL, with no characters after '.com.' If you continue to experience difficulties, please access your mail from the older version of Gmail while we work to resolve the issue."
Congrats Mick on being a "power user".
Thanks
I would also like to thank the subscriber, who wishes to remain anonymous, who generously offered to give me the money necessary to solve my Gmail problems. I thanked him but declined because I want to do this myself and do it free of cost and advertisements.
From Another Subscriber:
Greetings.
You really ought to try the programs you mention, before passing them on. That Talkster is a bit silly. As far as I can make out, when you use the service, a voice just says you should ring the number in your caller display, back!!
Cheers.
I sent back this email:
I don't test programs that are recommended in other reputable newsletters for several reasons. First, I do this as a hobby and don't have the time. I would spend most of my day doing it if I tested everything. And second, I am still using Windows 98 SE and less and less programs work on 98.
