Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007
http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes
"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them."

Security News
National Cyber Alert System Cyber Security Alert SA08-066A Sun Updates for Multiple Vulnerabilities in Java Original release date: March 6, 2008 Source: US-CERT Systems Affected Sun Java Runtime Environment versions * JDK and JRE 6 Update 4 and earlier * JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 14 and earlier * SDK and JRE 1.4.2_16 and earlier * SDK and JRE 1.3.1_21 and earlier Overview: In order to use certain web site features, you may have downloaded and installed Sun Java software. Vulnerabilities in Sun Java could allow an attacker to gain control of your computer. Solution: Apply an update from Sun If you have Sun Java installed, then you should apply updates from Sun to remedy these vulnerabilities. Follow these instructions to update your version of Java: 1. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel. 2. Open the Java Control Panel by clicking the Java icon. 3. Select the Update tab and click the Update Now button. (If you do not see an Update tab, your version of Java does not support updates, or you must log in as an Administrator.) We also recommend enabling Automatic Updates for Java. To enable Automatic Updates for Java, select the Check for Updates Automatically check box in the Update tab of the Java Control Panel. Note: Java version 1.3 does not provide Automatic Updates; you must update manually. To manually update Java, refer to the Java Downloads web page. If you install the latest version of Java, older versions of Java may remain installed on your computer. If these versions of Java are not needed, you may wish to remove them. For instructions on how to remove older versions of Java, refer to the following instructions from Sun. Disable Java Disable Java in your web browser, as specified in the Securing Your Web Browser document. While this does not fix the underlying vulnerabilities, it does block a common attack vector. Description Vulnerabilities in Sun Java may allow an attacker to access your computer, install and run malicious software on your computer, or cause it to crash. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing you to view a malicious web document. For more technical information, see US-CERT Technical Alert TA08-066A. References

Dreams have meanings?
They say dreams have meanings but I have never found this to be true. In one of my dreams, recently, this was said to me "Did you ever find any software to open up a California Kaysack" (caysac, kasac, I don't know the spelling). If you know what it means let me know. Mark.

I was spammed by a subscriber and sent them this email
Dear Subscriber:
You spammed me. Your subscription has been canceled. All of my addresses will delete your emails from (address censored) except my primary address at luem42.TakeThisOut@gmail.com . I don't know if you thought you were doing me a favor sending me jokes and videos but I only accept emails about my newsletter such as coolsites and freebies you have found, comments, complaints, suggestions, etc.. I did not open those attached videos or go to those websites for security reasons however the joke was funny. The reason I have done this is because I have to protect my subscribers addresses from being harvested by spammers and I don't know if your computer has been infected and is now a zombie sending these things to everyone in your address book to infect other computers. If you did this knowingly then stop doing it and resubscribe. If you didn't do this knowingly then your computer is infected. Mark.
His computer wasn't infected he just had my address in his personal folder instead of the business folder so I resubscribed him.
As you can see I do my best to protect your addresses and never use them for any other purpose then to send you my newsletter. Mark.

The iRemote. Apple take note.
I use a universal remote control but since they only have basic functions I still have to keep my other remotes at hand. If they can make a touch screen for the iPhone why don't they do it for a universal remote control. I would design it with several buttons on the sides and a touch screen like the iPhone. Just enter the make and model of your device (TV, VCR, DVD, etc.), select which button changes it and viola the remote is fully duplicated on the touch screen. If you buy a new device (TV, VCR, DVD, etc.) and the remote is not programed for that device it tells you to remove the battery cover and plug in a phone line. It then calls a toll free number and downloads the new program and if the manufacturer doesn't have the program it reports it so the manufacturer can make it within one month. I would pay $100 for this universal remote control. Mark.
