March 13 2009 COOLSITES Newsletter #208 by Mark Donaldson

Notice: This week's newsletter is a little late due to a plumbing emergency.

Notice: Last week many subscribers didn't get the newsletter because I included an example of a PayPal phishing email and the major filters blocked it. To ensure that you get the newsletter I will not include those email examples in the newsletter. I will include them in my online version and put a notice in the newsletter.

Notice: For some reason my online webpages have intermittently had a notice that bandwidth had been exceeded. I think this is a mistake and is Google's problem but it may be a cyber criminal attacking my websites in revenge with a DOS (denial of service) attack. I will be monitoring this and may have to call Google.

Subscribers who don't receive the newsletter, due to stupid filters, may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html ( .html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 9am ET, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.

If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more for the newsletter.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

Welcome to Clif Notes Newsletter
March 8, 2009

Thanks for reading. Here are the headlines from this week's newsletter.

Notice: Upcoming changes to Freewarewiki

I just want to warn you that over the next few weeks you'll be seeing lots of changes to the look and feel of freewarewiki as my web host, pbwiki.com, updates the software on my site.

This update will be adding lots of features that I can take advantage of to make it easier to publish freeware articles and the newsletter. I may also start adding volunteer editors to the wiki because the new features will allow better administrative control over the content.

I also work part time at pbwiki.com as a "support guru". If you ever click the help link at the top of a pbwiki page, you'll either get me or one of my co-workers here. If you need a free or premium wiki website, be sure to try it out. It's simply the best online wiki host in my opinion.

From www.komando.com

"DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAVE AN LG PHONE?

LG is recalling 30,000 of its 830 Spyder cell phones. The 830 Spyder can drop 911 calls if it can't determine GPS coordinates. Cell phones handle 911 calls differently from other calls. For example, GPS information can be passed to operators. And cell phones can connect to 911 even without an active cellular plan.

Affected phones run one of two software versions: T83LGV03 or T83LGV04. They were sold for use with regional wireless carriers. You can find the model number of your LG phone by looking beneath the battery. To determine the software version, open the cell phone's menu. Select Settings>>Phone Information>>Version. The phone's software will be upgraded to fix the problem."
