I am a college student planning to purchase a MacBook Pro as my next replacement laptop this summer. I am planning to get the 15.4" Macbook Pro model with the RAM capacity upgraded from the default 2 GB to 4 GB DDR3 memory, along with the Intel Penryn processors on the notebook. I am also planning to buy AppleCare with the laptop as well. However, I am still not comfortable about spending 3k on it, and wondering if it would make sense if there could be Apple Certified refurbished Macbook Pros close to the specifications that I am talking about. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hello,

I am not particularly familiar with Apple MacBook Pros, but perhaps you should wait until you are closer to your purchase and then check with your college or Apple to see what sort of educational discounts are available.

In January, just before the Penryn refresh, I bought a certified refurb MBP from apple.com. I had issues with the keyboard. You can read about that http://www.modifiedlogic.com/wordp2/archives/200

My advice is to buy a brand new one if possible. When you go refurb, you're definitely rolling the dice. Also, I have a friend who worked as a Mac Genius for quite some time and he told me, every time he opened a refurb product up to work on it, something was screwy with it.

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to wait until it's getting closer to the purchase time and then I'll check what kind of discount I can get then.
