I was forced to install the new version of MS Messenger before I could carry on using it. Resent that, myself. Does anyone know how to stop or block the...........er........."useful" (not) tips that now appear in a new window over Messenger on program start-up and have to be dismissed? I have already turned off virtually every extraneous item I can find but can't see an option to rid myself of the "tips". Seems yet another "improved" program that throws in everything but the kitchen sink. All I want is a simple messenger facility without of all these additional "social networking" gizmos that leave me stone cold. If they can't be turned off, I will un-install it and go for something else.

Have you tried turning off the general "Tool Tips" that affects all of Windows?

What version of Windows are you using?

Thanks. Using XP paired right down with everything already turned off (best performance and classic look) and no tool-tips anyway, although the ones that appear over the new Messenger are nothing like the small normal stuff. These windows that appear are BIG! Completely swamps the Messenger window. Get the impression they are served (if that's the right word) from the net. Doesn't happen every time. Thought there would be a setting to disable this facility or at least block it. Just annoying that they have to be closed. Don't want 'em!

Hmmm!
No way in Hxxx would I ever have MS Messenger on my PC. Rolling Eyes
I'd rather have a virus. Twisted Evil

But if those things that annoy you are Pop-Ups or Banner Ads, possibly a good Ad blocker like "AdBlock+" would solve your problem.
I don't however know if having AdBlock+ on your browser would stop the pop-ups on Messenger.

LG Forums is so absolutely Deluged with ads that I couldn't stand to be here for one minute without AdBlock+ .

Just a thought!

Yup, quite right. Have all the anti-this and anti-that under the sun but no effect on the Messenger messages. They're not exactly pop-ups. Just windows that just "appear" over the main window on program start (I don't start it with Windows) with terribly "helpful" hints as how to impart your mood of the day or how to make an animation.

As you can see, it momentarily obscures the main window. Can be moved to one side or dismissed in the usual way but what an irritant!

I know I'm "Old School" and I don't 'tweet' or 'face' or any of that new fangled stuff.
Some years back I joined a group of folks that used FireTalk and later PalTalk, but that was a chat room.

I never found any messenger to be any more useful than just plain old EMail.
I have Outlook Express ON all day and it's set to check for new mail every three minutes, so if you send me an email, I'll be reading it within three minutes.
And I don't have all the baggage that seems to come along with Messengers.
That includes the spam, spyware and viruses that can also be transmitted via messengers.

For this old war-dog, messengers just ain't worth all the hassle. Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing

Good Luck and Happy Holidays

is that not in the options area for the emotioncons of messager.

there is where it use to be to check for tips on or off. in messages using emotioncons. but i don't use the msn messager anymore too many unknown people try to get you to let them in so they can hack your system. and the ones i do know ended up swamping me when i was trying to talk to one of them or help somebuddy with a program they were setting up. so like doc i went back to using email.

from what you are describing i am thinking it is a flash window. they have added flash adverts to the ie now so they might have done that to the messager also. Confused

Hi Doc. Yup, I agree entirely. All this "social networking" nonsense also leaves me stone cold. Why folk would want to bare their soul for all and sundry to see is completely beyond me. All I use is Messenger and I have 6 contacts on there who are trusted friends and that's it, which is why the inane suggestions that keep appearing really, REALLY annoy me!

Keith, I think that was "INANE" and not "Insane".
Close, but not the same.
Inane means stupid, or just redundant. Not needed.
Webster says: "lacking sense, silly"

Like, much of what we have to read on these internet forums. Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Laughing Laughing

It would seem to this writer that 90+% of what's put out over the internet is truly "Inane".

I can't believe, the seemingly intelligent people who are totally taken up with "Tweeting" or "Facing".
I just watched a video clip of a groom at the alter who had to update his marital status on facebook, right after the minister said "I now pronounce you man and wife", while the new wife stood there waiting on him to finish.
The dolt had to do that, even before the KISS! Can you believe it?

I have a good friend, who has a Blackberry, that does everything but fix him food and tuck him in at night. Hardly five minutes goes by that he's not getting a text message or a phone call.
Yes, it takes pictures and plays music and he can surf the internet too.

I too have a cell phone, but it's a PHONE and that's it.
It doesn't take pictures, play music or send text messages.
It's a freakin' PHONE. I turn it ON to make a call and then turn it OFF.
That's it !

Sorry about the rant. We auldfahrts tend to do that sometimes.

Happy Holidays everyone !

Whew! You mean I'm not the only one who uses his cellphone to make, of all things, phone calls?

Wow! Thanks Dr. There I was thinking I was going to be the last man on earth to find that I just absolutely had to have my email cemented to my hip.

<tongue firmly planted in cheek - whatever emoticon that is!>

Well, it appears that you've been here long enough to freely express yourself,
without any apologies.

I use my cell phone so little that I've got over 4500 minutes stored up.
I'm going to park under a cell tower some night and call everyone I know, from AU. to UK.

Hello,

You might want to consider using a third-party instant messaging client, such as Pidgin or Trillian.
