Suddenly today my power supply just started to get extremely loud. I opened it and blew out the dust but still it is just unbearable. I have had the Ultra XFinity 600Watt PSU for 6 months and it has run perfectly fine. I also took off the side case panel and have my office tower fan blowing in but nothing has helped. It is also beginning to give this weird smelling scent. Is it going to die on me now or could something else be wrong?

Hello,

What sort of noise is coming out of your power supply? Is it a high-pitched whiny noise, a low rumbling noise or something else?

If it just the fan, then it may be possible to replace that, assuming the assembly is user serviceable. On the other hand, if it is one of the transfomers, then it will probably be easier to replace the power supply.

The issue with the smell, though, leads me to believe you are dealing with the failure of one of the components such as a transformer or capacitor.

You may wish to check with Ultra Products and see if the power supply is still under warranty. If so, then perhaps it can be repaired by them.

Regards,

What I did was I replaced the fans and the smell and noise was gone. I think it actually got quieter than before. Thanks for your help Smile

"What I did was I replaced the fans"
Which fans - inquiring minds want to know!!! Seriously, was it the PSU, or other fan?

There were 2 fans inside the PSU that I removed and replaced. I knew they were the problem from the start because they weren't blowing out heat they just went bad I suppose. These were the standard fans that came with the Ultra XFinity 600 Watt and were replaced with my case fans. (I am not sure of the name of the old case fans) I will soon buy new fans to replace the case fans that I used to replace the PSU fans,

Sure it CAN be done, as many things CAN be done, by anyone with even a modicum of technical expertise and some simple hand tools.
"Got Screwdriver?"

However opening a PSU will normally void its warranty.
But, it you're not worried about that, and you have the expertise to do the job, then GO FOR IT!

If you're color blind however, get someone to assist you to make sure you connect red to red and black to black. Those little fans don't like to be wired up backwards. Wink Laughing Laughing

Good going Zintix!
