| I was very disappointed to learn Gnomedex 4.0 won't be held in Des Moines and hope Gnomedex 5.0 will return to its roots.

| While Des Moines was Nice, I think that moving Gnomedex around the country makes it more interesting. Lake Tahoe is really cool -- especially around that time of year!!

Des Moines was more accessible, not all Gnomies can afford a trip to Lake Tahoe.
Where is next year's going to be, The French Riviera. |

I can say the same thing about Des Moines in regards to cost. Being from Northern California, Gnomies out here can't all afford a trip to Iowa, but can afford to go to Lake Tahoe.
Kinda the same thing as the olympics .. err .. bad example! |

Actually Des Moines was VERY EXPENSIVE for 80% of the U.S. population to travel to. As many of us learned, if you don't live within a couple state radius of Iowa, there are no direct flights and the filghts are *very* expensive. Plus, Des Moines gave Lockergnome a very cold welcome at the least.
Las Vegas would have been a much better location (convention capital of the world and filghts from anywhere are cheap). I suspect Tahoe will have similar flight related problems as Des Moines but it was probably a lot cheaper than Vegas to *host* a convention. |

Hello,
I have to admit to being a bit surprised that Lockergnome decided to host Gnomedex in Northern California instead of Southern California.
If memory serves, they are not too far from the Los Angeles and Burbank airports.

| No matter where they hold it, there will be an expense to deal with. I have not been to 1,2, or 3 so I guess LG could hold it wherever they choose to. The attendance figures compared to prior years will tell the story. |

As am I, Des Moines is about the only place I can get to within driving distance. Which isn't expensive to get to. Back to the roots, I hope next year as well. |

Howdy Folks!
I'm a newbie to these forums, but a long time LG reader and lurker. I wanted to weigh in on this topic.
I, for one, am totally stoked that LG4 is in Reno! I can't wait to get there! I've never been to Des Moines, so please don't take this as a slight to the midwest, but Reno is a hopping place. I live just outside of DC, so Des Moines and Reno are probably pretty much equal as far as accessability for me.
So, bring on the bartender and let's party! (OK, maybe we can learn something too...)
Regards,

And if anybody DIES or is seriously injured because of the "open bar", Mr. Pirillo will spend the rest of his life dealing with the foolish decision he made.
Are attendees going to socialize and learn about new computer technology, or to just get drunk? |

My dad and I attended Gnomedex 3 in Iowa last year and we both had an absolute blast. It was a nice change from the boring, monotonous, overcrowded coventions like PC Expo in NYC, or COMDEX. I found myself surrounded by like minded geeks, who's great passions are technology, internet, blogging, programming, gaming and all the cool things I enjoy. To be immersed in a group of people who are there for more than just the free crap vendors give away was indeed a rare and great experience. Most important, the speakers were downright awesome, and they were geeks! Tim O'Reilly, Nelson Minar, Jim Lauderback, Kyle Bennett, Chris Pirillo, and so many others. I would never have had an opportunity to see and meet these geeks if it hadn't been for Gnomedex.
I live in Minnesota, so the drive was short to the convention. The truth though, I am glad it's being held in Lake Tahoe, which is an absolutely georgous location. Ummm..you really dont have to twist my arm to choose Tahoe over Iowa..duh.
My opinion of the three day open bar is -- GREAT! All the free pop (soda for you easterners) I can drink for three days. I'll be bouncing off the walls, but not from booze, it'll be from caffeine. Most people at the conference are responsible enough not to get bombed and walk around sh*t faced all day. The people I met at Gnomedex 3 are fun loving people who probably will party after the night comes on, but what the hecks wrong with that? It's probably no different than what went on at Gnomedex 3, except they are saving a few dollars.
Anyways, I'm not out to convince anyone to go. I can only retell my *actual* experiences and opinions. The conference is what the people who attend make it.

| We too were more concerned about the alcohol theme than the change in location (though being from Iowa it was a convenience last year). When the new site was first put up, nothing was announced yet other than the big promotion of the open bar. Nothing highlighting speakers or topics for this year, just the alcohol. That didn't appeal to me in the slightest. I don't want to pay to go and hang around drunk people. Last year the partying was somewhat separate from many of the convention activities (at least all the ones in the daytime) and this was much appreciated. I won't be attending this year, but hope it goes well for all who do. |

| Frankly, I think "Geeks Gone Wild" is a crap name compared to Gnomedex. Makes it sound like a big frat party with a bunch of drunk geeks passing out on the floor and stuff. |

You've obviously never been to Gnomedex. That's pretty much what it was... |

Yes, the host is liable by law to not serve anyone who is drunk. Many a bar has been sued for still serving drinks to an inebriated customer. This law even applies to private home parties. But with all the money CP is getting from these Google ads, I'm sure he can cover any lawsuit. There also maybe insurance that will cover it?? |

Well, you'll notice that there's no mention of it on the official site anymore. Ran into cost headaches (no, Sipowicz, we're not making THAT much).
