Running Virtual PC on Vista 64 and have multiple Windows OS's in virtual machines for software testing... but need a Linux version. Anybody have successful experience installing in a virtual machine?
Which version of what... and where to download? |

I use VirtualBox to run Windows 7 under Mandriva Linux here. The way I get the O.S. installed is to get the distribution's installer disk image (.iso), set up VirtualBox for the new O.S. using its wizard, then boot from the iso image file as if it were a disk in the new VM. The rest is much like installing the O.S. on a normal hard drive.
I have not used Virtual PC here, so I do not know what steps would be required, or if it even supports a similar ability, but can not imagine a VM application without it . . . |

O.K. I got curious about Microsoft's Virtual PC, so I installed it under Windows 7. The first thing you will have to understand is that Microsoft will never support any version of Linux, so Virtual PC has no support for any Linux distribution.
With that said, you can create a Virtual Machine in Virtual PC, then install the Linux distribution of your choice to that V.M. You will be unable to set up the integration software, because it is a Windows executable (.exe) file, but you will be able to run Linux in Windows. I installed Mandriva Linux in Virtual PC this morning just to check that it will work O.K. It runs a bit slow, but it runs without errors. Personally, I prefer VirtualBox from Sun ( now merged with Oracle). It is not a Windows only program, so I can install it in the host system of my choice, and I can run the guest OS of my choice in it (with hardware integration available for most all O.S.'s (Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc.)).
