Linspire frees "Click 'N Run" software service

In a surprise move, Linspire is now offering its CNR ("Click 'N Run") software service at no charge to its Linspire and Freespire Linux distribution customers. In addition, the company will soon be open-sourcing the CNR Client.

CNR, previously a fee-based service offered at annual subscription rates of $20 for basic and $50 for premium ("Gold") access to new programs, had been the San Diego-based company main source of income.

Now, however, according to CEO Kevin Carmony, Linspire is doing well enough from selling its higher-end products and services that it can afford to offer its basic CNR service free of charge. Thus, both Linspire and Freespire users can use the extremely easy software delivery and update program for free.

I just bought the basic $20 subscription a couple of weeks ago. It was all I could afford right now. They're going to bump people like myself (subscribed in the last 60 days) to the Gold Edition.

I can't specifically remember the exact retail software titles at the moment that they offered with Gold, but the discounts are really deep for Gold Members. I saw programs that cost about $70 reduced to $10 at CNR Gold. Some in the $40-50 range only cost $5!

Yes, I too bought the basic and got bumped to Gold. I may now buy the Win4Lin Pro since there is a substantial discount. I'm currently using Win4Lin home but it is unsupported and limited in what it does. I have to say I like it but future kernels probably won't work with it.

Another interesting prospect is I have a copy of the Linspire that was offered for free. If I understand correctly now that I have Gold I can upgrade it to the current Linspire for free. Not that I really want Linspire now that I have Freespire still it's an interesting thought.

Yes, you can upgrade Linspire. I noticed "My Downloads" suddenly have newer versions. I'd purchased Linspire (Lindows) and CNR three years ago and my subscription had expired. So my last available upgrade was 5.0.6.9 or something like that. And a newer Spanish version for some reason. lol!

Now I can get 5.2 and soon they'll be releasing 6.0. It never hurts to get them for backup. Wink
