Hello,

I'm new to your forums and have been reading alot of your posts in Problem Solvers category.

I'm having internet connection problems. This is the first time in about a year that this has happened, and has been going on for about a week.

Every couple of days at startup, the internet connectivity icon comes up saying "Limited or no connectivity".

I opened up this connection, went to support tab, pushed the repair button and got this dialog-

Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP address.

I think there's an .MSC I can run to correct the problem, I just can't remember which one!!

I'm tired of running System Restore every couple of days, because contrary to Microsofts claim that none of your work will be affected, -NOT TRUE...

The only thing I can think of that would explain this is (fool that I am), I installed MS Media Player 11 Beta (I don't usually do Betas), and that is one scary program. Also when you go to uinstall and rollback to v10, it absolutely won't do it!

Any way thanks for your help.!!

System specs

AMD Athlon 1.3Mhz - 768 megs of RAM
2 80 gig harddrives.
XP SP2
Running AVG 7.1 Pro, Ewido, Zone Alarm
Use Ad-aware, Spybot SandD, Tweaknow RegCleaner Pro
Use RegSeeker from time to time.

PS - I have a very clean machine and keep up the maintenance almost every day. Haven't had any creepy crawlies in over six months. Very Happy

Hello,

Just a few questions? Are you using a router, if so make /model? And how do you connect to the net, dial-up, dsl, cable and who is your ISP?

On your connection - right click and select properties - uncheck limited or no connectivity box. And turn off your modem / router whatever the case, or both. Turn back on. Any difference?

And try this tool - Winsock repair for XP

Let us know.

It seem to be IP conflict. Plz check IP address. or go to command prompt type "ipconfig /release" hit enter, than type "ipconfig /renew" again.

sometime uncheck limited or no connectivity box will do....

if u are using window xp sp2, u can try go to c:\ prompt n keyin "netsh winsock reset" after run this command restart PC. If u r not using window xp sp2 is not advise to do so.

Sorry for the lack of info...

Connected directly through modem
Cable Broadband
ISP is Comcast

Since my connection is up right now, I can't see if your fix worked, but I went ahead and unchecked the box. Have to wait a few days til it happens again. I'll also download the Winsock repair program and try that as well.

Thanks for the help (and so fast too!)

Thanks.

In the long-run, I think the command ipconfig will be the easiest, least time-consuming way to go.

I still wish I knew what the underlying cause is.

You said to check my IP address. I already know what it is, but how would I find it in XP? I looked all over the place. Question

Thanks again everybody!! Razz

Hello,

Have you tried installing a router between the cable modem and your computer and letting it manage the network connection instead of your computer? If so, did the network connection work more reliably?

Regards,

I've had this problem twice in the last 2 months. Working 2 hours with tech and trying everything. The last time it happened I had to wipe drive and reformat. This time I had to uninstall SP2 download from Microsoft and then I had a internet connection. Also Microsoft has a patch for this problem. KB884020 it solved this problem on another machine. Hope it helps. Jim[/u]

Started up this morning, no connection!! I used everybody's suggestions, unfortunately they didn't work. Then as a last resort I ran Winsock XP Fix and darned if it didn't work, which is obvious since I'm online right now.

As far as the router is concerned, it's a great idea if I had the money, but I don't.

Wow. you had to wipe your drive? Talk about last resorts. Who was this guy who helped you, a bowling technician? Seriously though, sorry you had to go through all that. And thanks for the KB number - but wouldn't you know it - the Knowledge Base website is down today!

No, this machine has been online for 5 years and running with SP2 for at least 3 years, and I don't believe I've had this problem before. I'm guessing it was some corrupt registry keys because I ran Winsock XP Fix, rebooted and the connection was there.

Let's see what happens tomorrow in this continuing saga...

Again, I'd like to thank everyone for their posts.

Hello,

Well it's Tuesday morning and the connection is still there! Shocked

Yesterday I shut down my machine intermmitently 11 times just to see if Winsock XP Fix was the answer, and it was. Thanks Rons for the link, I don't know how many extra hours I would have spent messing around with this problem. Very Happy

Just wanted to stop in and say thank you all so very much. I had downloaded a registry cleaner to clean up my PC a little and well, I was a little overzealous. *LOL* When I rebooted my computer, it had the limited or no connectivity error and I spent most of the day yesterday trying to undo all I had done and trying little fixes that I knew, all to no avail. I got on my room-mates computer today and lo and behold, I found this site. The ipconfig /release and /renew wouldn't work. (The release did stuff, but renew couldn't complete) So I then tried the netsh fix, and it worked like a charm. Just wanted to say thank you SO VERY MUCH! Very Happy Very Happy I'll be sure to keep you all in mind next time I do something stupid. *snickers*

1ofgodsanointed,
1. What version of windows are you running?
2. When did you lose internet connection?
3. How are you connected? cable, dsl, satellite ? If cable is a router involved?
4. Have you tried resetting the modem?
5. Are you connecting wired or wireless?
6. How many computers on the network? Do any others have a connection problem?

On the XP, open a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all (note: the space between ipconfig and the /).
Post what you see.
I want to see if the router is handing out IPs properly.

This looks strange to me.
Normally a linksys router hands out addresses in the 192.168.1.x range where x can be anything from 100 up to 255.

Quote:
Default Gateway - 169.254.137.20
This, I think should be 192.168.1.1 which is the usual IP to get into the setup for linksys routers.

I have to try and see where the 169.254x.x address is coming from.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've had a look and this address gets assigned when the computer can't get an address from the router.
It appears that your winsock might be damaged and need repair.
Try this
http://majorgeeks.com/download4372.html
which is a Winsock fix for XP.
