LOL!!! I am new here and really this is probably going to be my only post, but I had to laugh when I read this. I just ordered a Dell!!! I have been a tried and true fan of HP for years. About 4 years ago I bought a good computer and paid quite a bit for it. We have an HP Pavilion f50 lcd 15 in monitor. A few weeks ago I noticed it flickering. About a week and a half ago I noticed that when I turn it on from sleeper mode or from being off that is flickers really bad and now the screen is dark....I can barely read or see anything for a minute or two and then it is fine. The duration of darkness is getting longer though.

I haven't tried hooking it up to another computer but I will be sure to do that. Either way, we are getting a new Dell! I got a great deal!!!!!!!

It was nice to hear everyone's input and ideas. I would have never though about a video card being the problem. I am good with the computer, but not that good! LOL

Thanks again.

Word for word, same problem here too, same monitor, same flicker, there is a website I found that says its a backlight problem, http://fixmymonitor.com/lcdmonitorrepair.htm
can be fixed for 100 dollars including labor, so I may just send it off, although, I could just invest the 100 plus shipping into a new LCD Tv, that sounds better. Hmmm.... what to do, stupid gateway, how could you do this to me, come on mr. gateway, your only one of the most richest men in world. Cant you fix my stupid monitor?

Hey, good news, dont throw out the monitor yet, found a site that sells backlights, either refurb or new, new has 90 day warrenty, but they have a replacement backlight, they say better than the AMBIT one for $99, I am going to try it.

These previous posts regarding the FPD1830 sounds like I'd have written them myself! From the flickering and going blank, to using the source/set to jump start my monitor to getting the same junk from Gateways tech support, including the... oh, just buy another of our monitors... Here is a clip of the email they sent me yesterday;
If the troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, your monitor is
defective and you may consider to purchase new monitor or send in to a
third party service center for repairs.

If you are planning to purchase new monitor, for more information or to
place your order, please contact a Gateway Consultant at the address
below.

Fat Chance Gateway.... Screw me once, shame on you,
screw me twice... shame on me!! Adios Gateway!!

I have exacly the same problem with my Dell 1800FP, inside it's the same model as the Gateway. :hmm: My TFT is now 1 jaar and 9 months old, so out of warranty. After writing some letters to Dell, they offered me to repair the monitor for 803 euro's ( approx. 1000 dollar). Easy as Dell.... Mad

The screen is flickering and the inverter seems to cause this problem. I made a picture of mine.

Did anyone replaced the invertor with success?

Hello,

It appears the inverter is made by ALPS. They are apparently for sale from LCDPart.Com and MoniServ.Com (which seem to be run by the same company).

Hello all

Just found this site while looking for help with my FPD1830 monitor (Gateway) monitor, that we've had a little over 2 years. I could have written any of the posts concerning the faulty monitor. Ours flickers on startup and blacks out. My wife discovered that repeatedly turning the monitor off and on, it eventually comes on, (but it is now requiring more and more button pushing) and works fine, even after its not been in use for an hour or so.

So other than joining in the shared misery, what is the bottom line? I've seen people suggesting backlight replacement, inverter replacement, bad video card, or simply buy another (definitely not a FPDanything...lol) monitor. Though not a computer whiz of any kind, I think I could replace a part, but if it simply buys another year or so, and then I'm back where I started, I'd just as soon invest in another monitor. However if the video card is the problem, a new monitor doesn't solve anything.

So what is the consensus?

Thanks

Well, looking at Tigerdirect, seems like a good deal ($199 after rebate) on a Fuji 19" monitor with a 12ms response time. Will basically any LCD monitor replace the FPD1830 that I have now? Any special abbreviations I need to be aware of? I've used a Fuji camera but haven't had any experience with their monitors. Any help for a brotha?........lol

Thanks

You don't hear much about Fuji monitors. It didn't make the top 10 here http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,122296,00.asp
and wasn't even mentioned in the also rans.
It isn't listed here either http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,1409036,00.asp
You might be very disappointed.

The first non-sponsored link on google for Fuji monitors is a repair service
http://www.questinc.com/catalog/monitors/m...uji-repair.html
somehow that doesn't look real promising either.

Hello,

If you are unhappy with the Gateway FPD1830 LCD monitor and do not wish to attempt repair, consider buying a new monitor; possibly one which comes with a two- or three-year warranty.

I personally have had good experiences with IBM, NEC, SONY and ViewSonic LCD monitors, however, there are lots of manufacturers out there to choose from. I believe Samsung was offering a "no dead pixels" guarantee on their LCD monitors for a while; I am not sure if they are still doing that, but if they are that might be a consideration for you.

I had the same problem, I had my monitor for about 2.5 years and all of the sudden the Gateway FPD1830 18" will take forever to heat up, took longer each time. I would have to turn the power on and off switch (it would display the screen for a split second then flicker and goes back into a black screen). I called Gateway and they are the worst support ever (no support at all)!!! The Gateway representative goes and blames it on the cold weather and even my APC UPS saying that may be the one taking longer to startup/heatup (Daaah, the APC UPS stays "ON" ALL the time). I told her I have 2 of these monitors and the other one has no problem powering on (displaying the screen) during the cool winter months. After talking to Gateway Rep for 34 minutes, I got nothing. They tried to offer me a new cable, they didn't even know the difference between a power cable and a video cable!!
The monitor is great -- when it works, but Gateway is just horrible in tech support and customer service.

Anyway, I purchased the replacement part from LCDpart.com (www.moniserv.com), they have a new and improve compatible part (backlight/ inverter) for $99.00 plus $9.99 shipping. Total $109.98, instead of purchasing a brand new monitor for about $299 plus shipping.
part link: http://www.lcdpart.com/Products/6633tza015amss.html

Installed the new part, took about 20 minutes using instructions from LCDpart.com and the monitor is up and working again. I'm not sure how long it will last. The part has a 90 day manfuacturer warranty and store warranty of 90-days also. One of the LCDpart.com Rep said the life of the part is usually good for a few years. So hopefully it will last longer than 2.5 years. If it does, buying the replacement (new compatible inverter) was a good deal! (saves from buying a new one a $200.00 savings). Considering some new monitors only have 90days - 1 years parts & labor.

Have you checked whether your monitor is still under warranty? Many models carry a 3-year warranty. If the warranty is recently expired, I would lobby very hard with Gateway support to repair the monitor for free or, failing that, to provide a replacement (maybe a refurbished one?) at a very low cost to you. Be polite, keep insisting, and hope for the best.
Our 17-inch crt monitor conked out twice. The second time we got them to replace it with a 19-inch model for about $50. The 19-inch one is still going strong several years later.

haaahaaa I ended up here like everyone else EXCEPT i'm on my SECOND inverter from lcd part.com, the first one lasted a year but unfortunately even after installing their new upgraded replacement for the replacement it still flickers on and off.

Any other solutions?

I also have the Gateway FPD1830 monitor that flickers and goes black. I can sit and hit the source button for ten minutes and it will finally come on. A real pain. Dell has been no help either. Has anyone found a fix for this problem other than buying a new monitor?

My FPD1830 has been having the same flickering problem. Fortunately, it hasn't gone black like many of yours. If I give the monitor a good smack, the flickering stops for a few minutes. I've always had good experiences with Gateway but this monitor is a lemon. Question is whether to buy a $400 19" monitor or new $1400 Gateway system?

I wonder if there is a class-action lawsuit with the FPD1830 monitor?

Hey guys. Yes, my monitor (FPD1830) started doing the exact same thing as all the rest of yours. It took over 50 on/off cycles to get the monitor to come on, and was getting worse. After opening the monitor up, I realized the inverter board didn't look complicated. So started the repair/troubleshooting.

To make a short story even shorter, you can fix your monitor for about 4 bucks. Replace the four (4) 100uF / 25 volt caps right by the power supply connector. FIXED! These 4 capacitors are all lined up in a row right in front of the 8-10 pin connector.

RadioShack probably has these parts, if not, try mouser or digi-key.
