I am anxious to transfer the programs I use most to my new computer (same XP OS), but the thought of reinstalling dozens of programs is a big put-off. Someone recommended Laplink Mover to me, but when I looked up reviews I was bewildered by the feedback ranging from "Excellent" to "Totally useless." They can't all be right!
Would anyone care to give a balanced view about this software?
I have four specific questions:
1. Can one select what programs and settings to migrate to the new computer?
2. Does the migration include the relevant registry information?
3. Does this obliterate or disable the migrated programs on the old computer?
4. Am I asking for the impossible?!
Feedback gratefully received. |

Probably!
Personally, I'd just as soon copy over the data files using a CD or Flash Drive and reinstall the software from the original distribution disks.
That way you're not transferring problems, malware, etc.
Copying the software and/or data files using laplink, should not alter the data on the original drive. To be a REAL "Mover" program, it would indeed have to get the registry entries as well as the program files.
Do you already have the program and the data transfer cable?
If not, I think I'd save my money.
I had the total Laplink package years ago, but almost never used it.
I've also had a USB transfer program......same thing, almost never used it.
Good luck to you,

Hello,
Laplink Software's PCMover software should allow you to select which programs to migrate to your new computer, complete with all their files and settings, however, it is possible there are programs it does not recognize or correctly migrate over to the new system.
I would agree with DrWho07's suggestion that the most reliable option is to perform a clean installation the software you want on your new computer from its discs or files downloaded from the author's web site.
