Was trying to us Knoppix to retrieve some files from window vista. Knoppix disk loads up and brings me to the desktop which shows the drives. However when clicking on the drive it says "cannot mount drive". Is there some place else i can look in Knoppix to find the windows drive?? Thanks cl

Thanks Gezzer. That showed me the size of the disk, but no files. It also said at the bottom, "No files, 2 folders", but wouldn't show the folders.

thanks again for the help. I'll try to find another way in. Not up on Linux

on the menu is there a root login item if so the user name is knoppix and the password is knoppix …

if all else fails then on the system menu is QTparted that will give you drive info and tell you if the drive can be accessed …

just as an added note
also try K3B on the knoppix disc its a burning program which may allow you to copy the files to CDR …

Says the same thing. Shows both partitions, but no files

Shows the drive and size, and says available.

Linux reads NTFS with no problem; it's writing to NTFS that can be problematic.

In the start menu, can you find konqueror? That's a file manager similar to explorer. Open it and in the address box put in hda1 ( a guess on my part).

I don't run Vista so I can't grab my Knoppix CD and test. I will say that last night I ran Mandriva and copied a file from 1 hd partition to another.

Where are you trying to copy the files you want to rescue to?
Do you have a USB drive plugged in? Is it recognized?

This is no longer true. The ntfs-3g driver provides reliable read / write support for ntfs partitions. If the partition is 'available' but no files are visible and can not be accessed, the most likely cause is that the partition is not mounted. Open a terminal window and run the following command:
Code:
mount
This command (with no parameters) will report all mounted drives / partitions).

I have WindowsXP installed in a Virtual Machine here, so I put my copy of Knoppix 3.5 (DVD) in the drive and ran the WinXP VM (booting it from Knoppix). My Windows partition is mounted read only so I can not write to my Windows files, but I can see them all, and I can copy them to my Knoppix ram disk, then delete the file I copied.

You should see a Hard Drive icon on your desktop for your Windows partition. Open it to access your Windows files. If you can not see your Windows files, you may have a problem with your Windows partition. Knoppix (at least the Knoppix 3.5 DVD) includes a utility named testdisk. Run testdisk in a terminal window. Follow the prompts (selecting analyze at the appropriate screen) to check your Windows partition. If you get a report of 'Structure OK" there is no problem with the partition. Testdisk is a very good recovery tool, so you may be able to use it to recover your files (or perhaps repair your Windows installation).

I found why it won't read the HD, or i can't do anything to it. The HD and the bios is password protected. The owner has no idea how did that. Waiting on gateway to reply if their is a back door password so i can disable these. Thanks for the help.
