Ever since I moved to broadband I've been looking for a traffic monitor that will show me a breakdown of my usage for not just my current session, but for the entire month (as I am on a capped plan). It hasn't been easy finding one that works in Linux as most are for system administrators, not normal end-users. Up until now I have been using kdevmon on my KDE desktop, but it resets each time I start a session, and doesn't show cumulative usage for the month.
Anyway, I just came across one that does the trick (RSS feeds can be very useful in keeping up-to-date with the latest software releases).
KTrafficAnalyzer is meant to provide visual feedback of your current network traffic, similar to tools like DU-Meter. In addition it provides statistics with total down and upload sums.
Starting with version 0.3.7 KTA supports reading the stats remotely using an SSH-connection. For instructions on how to use that feature checkout the SSHUsage file delivered with KTA.
You can download it from
KTrafficAnalyzer KDE-Apps.org. It is designed for KDE - I'm not sure if it will run on Gnome or other window managers, but it should if the right KDE libraries are installed.
