Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007
http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes
"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them ."

Welcome to Clif Notes Newsletter
June 3, 2007
This week there is no newsletter. It's 3:30am Monday morning and I just got back from visiting my Father-in-law's place during this weekend. His home is in the middle of Ohio's farmlands, with corn fields all around and no internet connections. I wasn't able to do any writing, so here we are.
I'm going to bed now, and I'll catch up with you next week I hope.

Security News
"Websense® Security LabsT has discovered a new email spam variant similar to attacks previously launched on the IRS and Better Business Bureau. The spoofed email claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The message claims that IRS is investigating the recipient and the recipient's company for tax fraud. The email prompts the reader download a document to help resolve the issue.
The document is an executable written in Delphi with the MD5 of (9d0252348a2b470be5950c216993f7ce). The infected document was not detected by any anti-virus programs we tested. The filename is Complaint.doc.exe, and is hosted on a server based in China. The server was up at the time of this alert. We are completing our analysis, but this appears to be a Trojan Horse and will not run on all systems. "

Space Weather News for June 2, 2007
A big sunspot is emerging over the sun's eastern limb, posing a threat for significant solar activity. Already it has unleashed several M-class solar flares. One of the eruptions, an M3-flare on June 1st, caused a shortwave radio fadeout over Europe. Amateur astronomers with solar telescopes should keep an eye on this photogenic sunspot, while shortwave radio listeners should be alert for flare-triggered fadeouts and other propagation effects. Visit
http://spaceweather.com for photos and more information.
Space Weather News for June 7, 2007
NIGHT-SHINING CLOUDS: Last night a vivid display of electric-blue noctilucent clouds (NLCs) appeared over parts of northern Europe, signaling the start of the 2007 NLC season. Noctilucent or "night-shining" clouds were first reported in the 19th century after the eruption of super-volcano Krakatoa. In those days, NLCs were confined mainly to high latitudes, but they have intensified and spread with sightings in recent years as far south as Utah and Colorado. The origin of these clouds is a mystery; they may be a side-effect of global warming. A NASA spacecraft named AIM is in orbit now to investigate.
The peak observing season for NLCs is late spring and early summer. For the next two months, northern sky watchers should be alert for silvery tendrils spreading across the western sky after sunset. High-latitudes (Canada, northern Europe, Alaska) are favored, but NLCs are capable of descending unknown distances south, so it pays to be alert no matter where you live. Visit spaceweather.com for pictures and observing tips.
BONUS BANG: Sunspot 960 remains big and active this week. Today's edition of
http://spaceweather.com features a movie of the sunspot erupting. It's a must-see.

Correction
In last weeks newsletter I drafted the story about Kevin Trudeau early in the week saying that the title of his new scam book was "More Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About". I then found out the title was "M ore Natural Cures Revealed". I was supposed to change it but I forgot. Ten minutes after I sent out the newsletter I finally remembered but it was too late. The title was correct when I posted my newsletter online. I have a habit of thinking my memory is good enough that I don't need to write myself notes. I guess I'm getting old. Mark.

Random Thoughts
Doesn't anyone else think it's more than a coincidence that after they started selling us bottled water they said we are under-hydrated and need to drink 8 glasses a day.
The greeners are using reusable designer shopping bags saying it's greener than store bags. This is a counter-intuitive. The energy and carbon footprint to make one reusable shopping bag is more than it takes to make 10,000 plastic store bags. Even if you get 10 bags a week it would take almost 20 years of using the reusable bag to be greener. And you know that they will update their designer bags when a new designer becomes more popular than the one they have and they won't be recycling the old one like you can do with plastic or paper shopping bags.
I was hoping Paris Hilton would do the stupid thing and skip the country because we don't need her. Instead she surprised me and turned herself in early. I said to Dee, my wife, that she would be smart to keep a journal and publish a book about her experience. The next day I heard she would. I guess she isn't as dumb as I thought she was. Now if she's really smart she will reinvent herself into a productive member of society and stop being Partying Paris.
WHAT THE #%&$!!! I wrote the above on Wednesday. Now it's Thursday afternoon and Paris has been reassigned to 40 days home detention because of a "medical Condition". The report I heard is that she was whining and crying constantly. So I guess being a whining, crying, spoiled brat and faking a nervous breakdown is a medical condition that can not be handled by the justice system. Why wasn't she transfered to the mental institute? Now that she's home she can party all she wants in the comfort of her mansion.
Thursday night. Now the city attorney has filed a motion to have Paris put back in jail. What a toady. He's just jumping on the popular opinion bandwagon as a political ploy to insure his reelection. Paris will appear in court at 9am PDT Friday for the judge to decide whether she returns to jail.
Final word about Paris. I hope this debacle will start a revolution in this country for standardized sentencing reform so that no matter who you are or where you are you receive the same sentence for the same crime. Mark.
Update for online version. After I sent the newsletter out, on Friday morning, Paris was ordered back to jail crying and screaming "Mom, Mom, it's not right." and was delivered to the correctional medical facility. Mark.

COOLSITES 145 cool links
I harvest what I believe to be the best links from the best sources that are safe, fun, informative, useful and just plain cool. I categorize them and edit their descriptions for clarity.
A word about all free programs I list in my newsletter. I do not test these programs especially since I use Win 98 and most don't support 98 anymore. I harvest these programs from reputable newsletters and other sources hoping that you can trust them but not all programs are trustworthy especially screensavers. A lot of programs will do the least harmful thing which is hijack your home page but the home page can easily be reset by you.
