Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them ." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

WARNING! NEVER GIVE YOUR CAR AWAY TO A PERSON. There is a new racket where by an individual will accept your car. Do what ever repairs are necessary and then sell it to an illegal alien who will NEVER SMOG it, INSURE IT or REGISTER it which will leave you on the registration and responsible for it.

Here is my story:: In September 2004 I put an ad in Craigs List offering my Subaru for free. I had 42 responses and gave it to the first person who called me. He accepted it and signed a receipt accepting the car and acknowledging that I was no longer responsible for parking tickets. IN less than an hour I had mailed the DMV notice of change of ownership as required. About six weeks later I received the first parking ticket. I made a copy of the signed receipt and sent it to the Daly City parking police and then went back in person to DMV to ask why I was getting the notice. They told me that there was no record of my filing the change of ownership notice so I filed it again. More tickets followed with the same result. Then in Feb. 2006 the car (with 20,000 more miles on the odometer) was wrecked and abandoned. I got the notice from the towing company and sent them a copy of the receipt and told them I was not responsible for the car. I am still getting notices from collection agencies and now they claim I owe them over $3,100 for towing and interest. Then, on Saturday, I got a legal notice saying that I owed over $7,000. for damage to the other guys car. This is an unending nightmare.

WARNING:: Never give your car to an individual. Give it to a wrecking yard or a widely recognized charity and most important, get a RECEIPT!

I sent back this advice:

The mistake you made is not that you gave it away to a private individual but how you did it. What you should have done was insist that the person accompany you to DMV, before taking possession, and retitle it as a sale for one dollar. This type of story needs more attention than my newsletter can provide. I suggest you send it to http://www.scambusters.org/feedback.html . Also include how old the car was and why you were giving it away for free. Thanks, Mark

Kevin Trudeau is scamming again

Kevin Trudeau is hawking his new book "More Natural Cures Revealed" all over TV in infomercials. Since his first book was a scam I can't imagine that his new book isn't a scam. Below is what I have on my website's home page at http://luem42.com

Click here to read an article by Michael Shermer about Kevin Trudeau's criminal past and his scam "Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About" which just directs the reader to Trudeau's Web page to find the "cures". "Some are not cures at all but just obvious healthy lifestyle suggestions: eat less, exercise more, reduce stress. Some of the natural cures are flat-out wrong, such as oral chelation for heart disease, whereas others are laughably ludicrous, such as a magnetic mattress pad and crocodile protein peptide for fibromyalgia. When you go there, however, and click on a disease to get the cure, you first have to become a Web site member at $499 lifetime or $9.95 a month." http://luem42.com/scam.html

Click here to read an article called "The Self-Help and Actualization Movement has become an $8.5-billion-a-year business. Does it work?" by Michael Shermer http://luem42.com/sham.html

Oprah Winfrey is helping to scam you

Oprah Winfrey has recently endorsed a book titled "The Secret" which is nothing more than a scam filled with hogwash such as "The only reason any person does not have enough money is because they are blocking money from coming to them with their thoughts," The book is also filled with money mantras such as "Everything I touch turns to gold," "I am a money magnet," and "There is more money being printed for me right now.".

There is other bullcrap such as "It has been proven scientifically that a positive thought is hundreds of times more powerful than a negative thought." What! I have been following science all my life and have never heard of any scientific study proving this. And how about this one "Our physiology creates disease to give us feedback, to let us know we have an imbalanced perspective, and we're not loving and we're not grateful." So everyone who gets sick is a bad person? And here's one that is true "You've got enough power in your body to illuminate a whole city for nearly a week.". Of course that is a gross underestimation because E=MC2 says there is more than enough energy to blow up the Earth if we knew of a way to convert your mass into energy.

Michael Shermer has written an article about this that is in the June 2007 issue of Scientific American that I have reprinted, and the above articles, as a public service: http://luem42.com/shame.html . Mark.
