January 30 2009 COOLSITES Newsletter #202 by Mark Donaldson

This week's issue continues with my adventures in upgrading my computer system

Subscribers who don't receive the newsletter, due to stupid filters, may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html ( .html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 9am ET, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.

If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more for the newsletter.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

Space Weather News for Jan. 9, 2009

APPROACHING COMET: Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3), discovered in 2007 by a collaborative team of Taiwanese and Chinese astronomers, is swinging around the sun and approaching Earth. The photogenic comet has a bright tail and an "anti-tail" visible in mid-sized backyard telescopes. At closest approach in February, Comet Lulin is expected to brighten to naked-eye visibility. Visit http://Spaceweather.com for sky maps, pictures and more information.

Adventures in upgrading

My computer did not come with a XP CD or a hidden partition. Instead it started installing XP when I first turned it on and when it was done it deleted the installer. This means that any problem and I would totally lose it. I had a free copy of Acronis 7 that I downloaded and registered but never used in my old 98 system because it would take 5 CDs to image it. Now that I had a DVD recorder I installed and made several images that I keep it several different places. One on C:. Another on E:. And another on DVD. Once A week I make another image in all 3 places. All other extras that I don't image ( My Documents, videos, music, etc. ) I copy to a 8 gig USB drive.

So now my system is complete. IBM Intellistatiom M, XP Pro SP3, Pentium 4, 2.8 gigaHz, 2gigabyte RAM, 40 gig primary hard drive, 60 gig secondary hard drive, DVD burner, CD burner, 15 inch NEC LCD (Thanks cousin Billy), HP Scanjet (Thanks cousin Billy) and an 8 gig USB drive all for $260 total and it's "bullet-proof". Only a motherboard failure can kill it.

A word about Surplus Computers. I have been purchasing from this dealer for years. My last computer, a Compaq that was owned by Enron, was from them. I have been pleased with the purchases I have made from them but I have noticed that the non-computer stuff they sell have minor defects which are still worth the price. This dealer has good prices but a bad reputation online and without phone support I can't recommend them. Deal with them at your own risk as I have been doing. http://www.surpluscomputers.com
