January 23 2009 COOLSITES Newsletter #201 by Mark Donaldson

This week's issue continues with my adventures in upgrading my computer system

Subscribers who don't receive the newsletter, due to stupid filters, may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html ( .html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 9am ET, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.

If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more for the newsletter.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

Space Weather News for Jan. 9, 2009

APPROACHING COMET: Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3), discovered in 2007 by a collaborative team of Taiwanese and Chinese astronomers, is swinging around the sun and approaching Earth. The photogenic comet has a bright tail and an "anti-tail" visible in mid-sized backyard telescopes. At closest approach in February, Comet Lulin is expected to brighten to naked-eye visibility. Adventures in upgrading

My new XP computer was only updated to SP2 so I went online to find SP3 and found it was over 250 meg. On dialup that would take 16 hours to download. With some further research I found I could buy a SP3 CD from Microsoft for $10.48 with the shipping so I ordered it. Less than two weeks later I updated XP to SP3. Thank you Microsoft.

How to obtain the latest Windows XP service pack http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

At about the same time Surplus Computers had a deal on more memory for $10. The ad said "House Brand pair 256 meg" so I ordered it thinking that will give me 1 gig total. When it arrived it wasn't a matched pair and wouldn't work in the system so I sent it back asking for a matched pair. They replaced it with a matched pair and when I installed it I found it was a pair of 1 gigs not the pair of 256 meg I had ordered. For some reason the old 256 meg pair wouldn't work with the 1 gig pair so I pulled them and now have 2 gigs. I don't know if Surplus Computers sent me the 1 gig pair because they made a mistake, didn't have any other matched pairs or were trying to "reward" me for all of my troubles. Thank you Surplus Computers.

Next week I make my system "bullet-proof".

A word about Surplus Computers. I have been purchasing from this dealer for years. My last computer, a Compaq that was owned by Enron, was from them. I have been pleased with the purchases I have made from them but I have noticed that the non-computer stuff they sell have minor defects which are still worth the price. This dealer has good prices but a bad reputation online and without phone support I can't recommend them. Deal with them at your own risk as I have been doing. http://www.surpluscomputers.com
