January 16 2009 COOLSITES Newsletter #200 by Mark Donaldson

This week's 200th issue with my adventures in upgrading my computer system

Subscribers who don't receive the newsletter, due to stupid filters, may use a private link to download the newsletter in the text ( .txt ), html ( .html ) and the MS Word Doc ( .doc ) format in a zip file. I will upload the zip files to my archive site right after I send out the newsletter on Friday morning. If a subscriber doesn't receive the newsletter, by 9am ET, they can quickly download it, unzip it and peruse it offline. You can also read it online from there.

If you are a subscriber and don't know the private link you can email me for it. These zip files are less than 40K which is smaller than the 100K or more for the newsletter.

Clif Notes Newsletter, Feb 2007 http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotes

"The COOLSITES Newsletter - find the coolest links here. This fella named Mark Donaldson has been sending out his lists of cool sites since 2003. I'd never heard of him before last week. One day I was Googling myself to see who was posting links to my newsletter, and I found his website. I guess he's mentioned my newsletter at least 3 times. I like the COOLSITES website too, but I think it could use some reformatting to make it a bit easier to read. What I really like is the content there. Mark must really read a lot of stuff on the web and he takes the best links then tells you about them." http://freewarewiki.com/CoolSitesNewsletter

ATTN: Sir /Madam
Dear Friend,

I know this will come to you as a surprise but never mind, I got your Contact in my search for a reputable and trust worthy person/Company, Who can stand confidently with me in this successful business?

I am the Auditor General of a Government Accredited Oil Company here in Nigeria. Certainly, the prompting of this letter to you is anchored on my strong desire to solicit your sincere understanding and co-operation in this Transaction that would certainly boost the financial stand of both parties involved when completed. As a matter of fact, we want to transfer to overseas (US$ 152,000.000.00 USD) One Hundred and fifty two million Unite States Dollars) from the Oil Company's operating Bank account here in Africa, I want you to quietly Look for a reliable and honest person who will be capable and fit to Provide either an existing bank account or to set up a new Bank A/C Immediately to receive this money, even an empty account can serve to Receive this money, as long as you will remain honest to me till the end Of this important transaction, trusting in you and believing in God That you will Never let me down either now or in the near future.

In all honesty, during the course of our auditing I discovered a Floating fund of the above mentioned amount in account opened with the Bank in 1990 and since then; nobody has operated on this account again, After going through some old files in the records I discovered that the Money in the account was mapped out for the refurbishment of the Oil Company's Machineries. Meanwhile, Mr. Magnus Leon, the President of the Oil company was the Only signatory to the account, but unfortunately he died after a brief Illness in 1993. And no other person knows about this account or any Thing concerning it, and the account has no other beneficiary. And my investigation proved to me that Mr. Magnus Leon, until his death Had wanted to siphoned that money into his personal account in New York Hence he did not disclose the operating devises of the account to the Board of Trustees.

I am only contacting you in this regard, based on the fact that you are A foreigner because, this money can only be approved to any foreigner Who can present all documents that will prove that he/she is the Next of Kin/Beneficiary to the account base on the fact that Mr. Magnus Leon The owner of this account is a foreigner, and the money can only be approved into a foreign bank Account. Therefore, if you are capable of handling this transaction with me, lets Make the necessary arrangement for the hitch-free transfer of this Money to any safe bank account that you may nominate, on a share Percentage bases. However, we shall sign a binding agreement, to bind us Together as partners in this regard.

Upon your Positive response and once I am convinced that you are capable and Willing to meet up with the instructions of the top bank official that is deeply involved with me in this business, I shall commence actions Immediately to process the payment of the money in your favor as the Beneficiary With my influence and the position of the bank official we can transfer This money to any reliable foreign bank account, which you can provide.

Adventures in upgrading

Three months ago an online computer surplus dealer, that I have been dealing with for years, sent me an offer I couldn't refuse. An IBM Intellistation M Pro P4 2.8 gHz XP Pro with CD burner for $170 with shipping. When I received it I found that it had a CD reader not a burner. When I contacted them by email, because they discontinued phone support, I didn't receive an answer until I put in the subject line that I would put the credit card charge into dispute. They told me to get an RMA and return it. That would have cost me $30 in shipping during the height of the gasoline rise. So I offered them a deal they couldn't refuse. I would buy a $26 DVD burner from them if they sold it to me with free shipping. After two more emails with "I will put the credit card charge into dispute" in the subject line, to get their attention, they agreed. When the DVD burner arrived it took two more emails to get the shipping charged back to my credit card. At this point I was satisfied. I had a great computer that had a DVD burner and my old CD burner.

Next week my RAM upgrade from 526 meg to 2 gig and updating XP Pro from SP2 to SP3.

A word about this dealer. Like I said I have been purchasing from this dealer for years. My last computer, a Compaq that was owned by Enron, was from them. I have been pleased with the purchases I have made from them but I have noticed that the non-computer stuff they sell have minor defects which are worth the price. This dealer has good prices but a bad reputation online and without phone support I can't recommend them. Deal with them at your own risk as I have been doing. http://www.surpluscomputers.com
