Hi,
I just connected a computer to a 4-port router. The internet works fine in Mozilla, but when I go into IE, it doesn't work. The computer already was connected previously, and both worked fine. I am, however, using a different (longer) cable now. And only Mozilla works. I didn't change any settings since everything last worked. Why would IE suddenly stop working? I know it's not the internet connection. So what can be causing the problem?
I hope someone has a solution!

| Well, my 1st answer would be to say 'Don't bother using IE, stick to Mozilla' , but I hate things not working right, whether I use 'em or not.
Networking isn't my strongest forte, but the 1st place to look would be Control Panel - Internet Options - 'Security' tab, then click on the 'Local Intranet' icon at the top of the box. Try setting this to 'Medium Low', then OK everything back again.

El,
My first impulse was to say, "How did you get so lucky"?
Then I thought that would be a bit "flip".
So I decided not to say that.
But after all else fails, don't reformat that PC. Get the I.E.Tab add-on for FF and install it and never look back.
Once I started using I.E.Tab to access I.E. only sites from FF, I removed the big blue 'e' from my desktop and quick launch toolbar.
If you've not tried it yet......give it a try!
auf wiedersehen

Ah, the mysteries of Microsoft.
Are you getting a 404 error? If so, just check that for some reason, work offline is not checked/ticked in IE.
Also, this is "patch Tuesday", I wonder if that has any affect on IE? Patch Tuesday is usually the only time I fire up IE. |

I wish I could stick to Mozilla! But, for one thing, I also don't like things not working, and I also need IE for one of the antivirus programs (avast!), and who knows what else, to update. I don't know if I can change the settings, so that it updates via Mozilla.
Concerning this, the I.E. Tab add-on also doesn't help. But it's still very useful, thanks!
Unfortunately, changing the security setting doesn't help. No matter what I change it to.
I don't get a 404 error. If I type in the address, I get a window saying 'the address is invalid' (or something similar. Again, it's in German). And otherwise, I get a window saying 'the website cannot be displayed'.
What do you mean with 'patch Tuesday', zlim?
I'm going to try reinstalling IE, see what the results are.

I'm afraid, I don't know how to reinstall IE.
I can't download IE7 again, because it's already on the system. I can't download an older version of IE because I already have the newest version on the system. I can't do a roll-back because I'm working on a Vista, and IE7 was already pre-installed. And I can't find out how to de-install IE, because it's not listed in the add/remove software panel.
I could just delete all the IE program files. But I wanted to ask what harm this can do, before I do it. The worst thing I can imagine happening is that IE is not completely removed, and I have to re-install. But that's what I want to do anyway.
Or is there any other way to reinstall IE7?

Is it trying to open the site you type in or is it redirecting to this message in another language? That sounds to me like its being hijacked or redirected. Have you run spybot or any cleaners? How about clearing the history, cookies, cache, and internet files.
I would not just delete the IE files in explorer. IE is built into the OS and could damage it. You could however go to remove programs, click on remove windows componets, scroll down to IE, and uncheck it. This will remove it, and then allow you to reinstall a fresh copy. |

I deleted all the internet files (history, cache etc.)
The message is in German because I am using a German operating system. So, it's not some unknown foreign language. It doesn't redirect me anywhere. The address I typed in is still in the address bar, but it can't display the website. I think the message shown is the standard IE7 message if a website can't be displayed. So it also tells you the most probable causes. None of which can be the reason (no network connection, typing error, an error in the website).
I now ran a network diagnostic (I hope I managed to translate that correctly! The German is Netzwerkdiagnose), and it said that it could not find any problems with the network connection of the computer.
I run an Antispyware scan (AVG Antispyware) every second day. Last time was yesterday. It just found the usual tracking cookies, which I always delete. I don't suppose Avast! would be much use, as I can't update it.
With de-installing IE, I get to the 'remove windows components' part, but I then can't find IE. And it's called 'windows functions' not 'windows components', if I directly translate from the German. In 'help' I read that, in Vista, this only deactivates the feature, but doesn't de-install it (new to Vista). But maybe that would still allow me to re-install. If I could just find IE in the list...

Sorry a 404 error essentially says, "Page not found".
Did you click on File and make sure that work offline was not checked or ticked? Sometimes for unknown reasons that box gets checked/ticked and it appears that your browser is broken.
Again "patch Tuesday" means the 2nd Tuesday of every month when MS releases all the patches and updates.
In IE 7, what happens when you type in http://www.google.de/ ?
I will look to see if I can find anything on repairing IE 7 and post back my results. |

Ok, if you don't see IE in the windows components try this.
Restart the computer in the Recovery Console.
Type the following commands. CD ie7\spuninst, and hit enter. Then
type batch Spuninst.txt, and hit enter.
If that doesn't work, maybe this.

Hello,
Perhaps a setting in Internet Explorer 7 is corrupt.
Have you tried resetting Internet Explorer 7 to its default settings by selecting Tools -> Internet Options from the main menu, going to the Advanced tab, and clicking on the Reset button towards the bottom of the window?
Regards,

Resetting didn't help. IE still doesn't work.
I went to google (typed in http://www.google.de/) and got the following, by now rather familiar, error page (I am, once again, not sure if I translated correctly, but I hope it's good enough for everyone to understand):
The website cannot be displayed.
Most probable causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
There is a problem with the website.
There is a typing error in the address.
etc. etc.
I didn't update IE, or anything else on the computer, before it stopped working.
I'll try de-installing IE with the Recovery Console as soon as possible.

I now tried the connection, which I was using before, where everything used to work. But IE also doesn't work there anymore. So it's not the cable. Or anything to do with changing location.
Before, I used a short ISDN cable, with 8 wires (I hope ISDN means something in English!). But as the quality of a ISDN cable was too low for the distance I needed, I'm now using a Ethernet cable. And since then, IE has stopped working.
I don't know if that's any help

| What are you using for a firewall? Maybe for some unknown reason IE is blocked but the other browsers are not. (I know I have my Zone Alarm set so that IE has to ask permission but FF can go right on the internet when I click the icon). |

I was using a trial version of symantec internet security (it came with Vista), but that expired ages ago. Since then, I've been using Windows Firewall. IE works in Safe Mode, with Network Connections. I now deactivated a lot of programs, and am deinstalling all the unnecessary ones.
I'm also updating Windows. I've not completely finished with everything, and am just waiting. I'll write what the results are once I'm through.
It turns out that Dreamweaver also (probably) doesn't work while IE doesn't work. I can't connect to the server through Dreamweaver, but I can through GoLive. So, another reason to get it working again.
Does anyone know what is actually deactivated in Safe Mode (so that I have a better chance of finding what's blocking IE)?

Symantec was the problem. I couldn't deinstall it, but I thought it wouldn't be doing anything, as it had expired.
I now used the Norton Removal Tool to finally remove it. And suddenly, IE is up and running again! And so is everything else.
Thanks!
