Hi
We have just switched from BT to Sky Boardband. We have four computers on our Home network. Three of witch are working fine. The otherone fails to connect to the internet through the router. I have checked automatically and manually typing in address's but alass it dose not work. All I get is "Unidentified Network". I have connected the router directly to the computer illiminating any cable problems but it still does not work. I Assume tha the inboard network system on the computer has failed. By the way I can still see the faulty system ands access the network files. Anyway my question is if I purchase a network card and plug it into the PC slot would this override the problem.
Any response would be appreciated

Allo Balsoft and a belated welcome to the Lockergnome forum

Can you see the other PC's from the faulty one, as well as seeing the faulty one from t'other PC's?

If all the PC's can see and talk to each other, then the hardware is fine, leaving only the software as the culprit.

Unfortunately, I don't have Vista, so I can't help you with that bit, but there's lots of gnomies who can Wink

Yes I can see other computers from my wifes computer and see her computer from the others three. I've downloaded the latest drivers but my daughter bought the motherboard from ebay and it's a Sydney (Asus M2N-NM) socket AM2 which I understand was new board past it's selby date as far as Packard Bell are concerned. Finding drivers for it is a problem. Anyway if anybody comes up with an answer it will be appreciated.
Thank for your input lads

From what you have described, It seems to be in a setting, or software.

1. Check the PC firewall and other Internet setting. You may have a weird setting in there that is only allowing local "safe" network packets in. Also do a "release/renew" on the IP address.

2. Check the setting in the Router itself. For some "odd" reason, the settings my have gotten be-fuddled. Check to see if THAT PC's IP address has for some reason been blocked from Internet access.

I agree that SINCE you are able to SEE the other PCs in the "network", it goes back to software.

Hello,

I am wondering if the fourth computer (Packard Bell system with the Asus Sydney M2N-NM Socket AM2 motherboard) running Microsoft Windows Vista might have the incorrect network settings on it, as PCRatTail suggested.

Try opening an elevated Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE under Microsoft Windows Vista and issuing an "IPCONFIG /ALL | MORE" command, look for the DNS Server entries and write them down. Then repeat this on one of the working computers. Are the values for the DNS servers the same on both computers?

Regards,
