When I try to print a page I get a script error. It says there is an "incompatible version of the RPC stub"
I have found lots of knowledge base articles on a problem with Instashield and this incompatible rpc stub. It also points to a URL, actually a path on my pc of "c:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg

My problem is not during an installation, just during a print command in IE.

Can anyone offer a fix? I have IE 5.50.4807.2300IC, win98 2nd edition running on a 4 yr old celeron.

I prefer not to upgrade

This problem is usually fixed by replacing the oleaut32.dll file through System File Checker.

I've included the steps "just in case":

Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information, and then select Tools>System File Checker. Click on "Extract one file from installation disk" to enable it, then put "oleaut32.dll" (without the quotes) into the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field.

When it asks you where to look for it, first try C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, click OK. If it says it can't find the file, tell it to look on the Win98 installation CD (which you will then have to put into the CD drive, of course).

Tell it to save the extracted file in C:\Windows\System.

Post back with the results.

Same problem in Windows ME. Tried your solution but there is no "System File Checker"! Error names the following URL
URL:res//C:\Windows\System\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg

Any suggestions?

In WinME, this feature is accessed through Start>Run, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK and click on the "Extract File" button. Complete instructions (with graphics) can be found here. Scroll down to the WinME section.
