|
|
At home we have a number of computers connected to a wireless router which is in turn connected to a cable modem. My son's laptop is currently registering that it is connected to the wireless network but no pages will load in Internet Explorer and he cannot connect to msn or use anything else that requires an internet connection. All other computers do not have a problem. I tried connecting to the network via an ethernet cable with the same result so I gather the problem is not with the wireless network. I have tried things like uninstalling the network adapter and have also run an antivirus scan using AVG with nothing showing.
Any ideas?? |

Tuesday's MS patch and ZA firewall will block internet access. perhaps that is the problem.
For the moment, set the slider in ZA from high to medium on the internet and see if he can get online. If so, that's the problem. ZA has issued some fixes for the problems. |

That one drove me crazy too.
Go into Control Panel and uninstall MS Update KB951748. Now you'll be able to get on line.
Download & install the latest ZA version (7.0.483) You can get the full file at filehippo and put it on a thumb drive for multiple installs.
Run Windoze update and you should be good to go. |

Given that we know every little of the setup, this is ALL speculation.
(if the info given is NOT your case & you go blindly changing things it can make matters worse - especially for the troubleshooter)
We need to know the OS, A/V & Firewall setup of each computer PLUS how you have the network actually hooked up. Alone with anything that had changed, what you were doing, & such. We don't even know if you DO run the updates or not or even HAVE ZA.
On my system here, under certain conditions it looks like it is connected, too but it can't authenticate so I get no connection until I fix it. (usually giving it the password to do so) |

Go back and read his post. Seeing as how the user says he has Internet Explorer I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that he's using Windows.
As for an A/V he does mention that he's using AVG.
He posted the problem on Thursday which is two days after patch Tuesday. A vast majority of Windows users out there have the updates set to automatic. Again, I'd bet that the patches were installed.
I doubt that he was having this problem last week. I saw the exact symptoms that he described manifest itself on three computers on Wednesday. No problem connecting to the network but unable to view any internet pages. One computer could not connect to the internet immediately after re-booting after the patch. All three were using ZA. Oddly enough, I looked at a fourth computer that did not have any problems and had the updates installed. It was running Comodo.
I will admit that maybe I should not have assumed that he was using ZA. However, like I said in my original post, it drove me crazy. After much research I found that ZA is the only firewall that was having problem.

BUT we don't know that for sure of ALL the machines....
& there are a LOT of versions of Windows - makes a difference if the patch isn't the problem, & the "FIX" is still speculation.
I've learned the hard way (especially on this forum) do NOT assume ANYTHING!!!! |

You feel that I am jumping to conclusions one way yet you are doing it in the opposite direction. Like I said before, go back and read the original post.
Of course there is no way to know about all the machines. There are millions of computers out there. However, in cath_oh's post he (or she) says that the problem is with her (or his) son's laptop. There is no problem with the other machines in their possession.
I'll stick with my original diagnosis which is not based on speculation. Rather, it is an educated guess.
So how about it cath_oh, tell us, what is your son's OS, A/V, and firewall. |

NO - all I'm saying is that I (we) NEED FEEDBACK before we can give a DEFINITE answer to what the TRUE problem is. - & that he / she would be BETTER OFF WAITING for a definite answer before doing anything.
(but this isn't a debate forum - so I'll leave it at that) |

I didn't mean to create such angst.......!!!
My son's laptop is running Windows XP, using AVG A/V and running ZoneAlarm (as do 2 of the other computers on the network. Mine is a MAC).
He 'fixed' the problem by using the system restore function yesterday but on restarting the computer, had the same problem. I'm no expert but to me this suggested that the patch is the problem and that it was automatically installed when he restarted. He turned off automatic updates for both Windows and ZA but hasn't woken up yet today to see if this works! I'm assuming he should wait for ZA to release a patch to fix the issue if there are other people having the same problem?? I'm not sure why the other 2 computers with the same basic configuration did not have the same issue?
And to settle any other arguments, cath_oh is a girl! |

You didn't - so PLEASE, just ignore it.

OK, with all that answered, go with the uninstalling of the updates. The other option is to set ZA to med.
By all means DO shut off (WINDOWS - ZA is OK left on) auto update - it will only bite you - if you NEED an update do it MANUALLY & only 1 or 2 at a time, if something breaks you will know what it is & can back out.
Not sure on the other computers myself (excluding the MAC of course)
BTW: I thought you were a girl but there again I wasn't gonna assume.
& the "restore" I would say, you are definitely right in your thinking. |

Ahhhh. QED. I feel better saying that than "Mea culpa."
A system restore will only be a temporary fix since Windoze Update will automatically apply the patch soon after restoring.
To repeat my first post in this thread:
"Go into Control Panel and uninstall MS Update KB951748. Now you'll be able to get on line.
Download & install the latest ZA version (7.0.483) You can get the full file at filehippo and put it on a thumb drive for multiple installs.
Run Windoze update and you should be good to go."
It's OK to leave the ZA updates on automatic but for now download and install the latest version. That can be found here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/
Be sure to use 7.0.438 or more recent. Any older version will mess things up again.
As for the automatic updates, you can set it to download the updates and/or notify you that they are ready. To do this click "Start", "Control Panel", "Security Center." A window will open. At the bottom right click on "Manage security settings for Automatic Updates." Another window will open. Click either "Download updates for me..." or "Notify me but..." These choices will help you remember to do the periodic update. Click "OK."
When you are notified that there are updates install, one at a time, only the ones that you know that you need. If you're not sure don't be afraid to ask. |
