After running across:

http://channels.lockergnome.com/linux/arch...made_easy.phtml

I decided to let you all know about an updated/complementary article:

HOWTO: INSTALL GENTOO 2006.0, GNOME, KDE
AND XFCE IN LESS THAN 180 MINUTES.

Then click here:

http://m.domaindlx.com/LinuxHelp/

http://linux.coconia.net/ (this site seems to have been forced closed by whoever runs www.100webspace.com).

There are also HOWTOs on:

1) cloning your windows XP/2000 installations using Linux (back-ups).
2) installing windows XP/2000 on a spare partition with Linux.
3) accessing and writing to Windows XP (formatted with the NTFS) from Linux.
4) compile the worlds best DVD/Movie/Video/MP3 Player and Encoder (MPlayer and MEncoder).
5) remix those 14 Debian installation CDs as 2 DVDs.
6) the entire book "Linux Device Drivers 3" in HTML format.
7) 3D acceleration for ATI cards (simple procedure, works for SuSE and Mandriva and Debian).

I am surprised that this topic has not generated any interest.

I have just recently started dipping my toes into Linux, so please don't think of this as an insult. What you described may be the best thing since sliced bread, but I gotta tell ya, the 3 hour thingy.... I thought you were being sarcastic.

I know - my Mandriva took about half an hour to install before I was surfing the Net using Firefox on my KDE desktop.

But the topic certainly hasn't been "ignored" - it's up over 900 views. A lot of those people may have followed the process, but just not bothered providing feedback.

As a "Gentoo -er" for the past year (after having messed around with Mepis and Mandrake) I can tell you that you can indeed have Gentoo up and running quickly. The method they use requires the use of both the LiveCD as well as the appropriate package cd. I don't know about the three hour claim to install all that - as I've never installed that way!

The beauty of Gentoo (which is kind of negated in the How To) is that the whole distro can be customized to your individual machine. From the files sytem you want to use, to the specific hardware contained in your box, to the software and services YOU need/want. Everything is compiled and optimized for your hardware and applications. For instance, there are many, many, many applications available for use in KDE! I have broadband cable internet access - so I don't need the PPP app, nor do I need any wireless apps/tools on this (desktop) box. By choosing which packages you "emerge" through "portage", you can customize your KDE from as minimal as possible to the WHOLE SHEBANG!

The drawback to this customization is time. Each package requires time to compile. (A broadband internet connection is also very helpful!) I can do a stage3 install in less than 2 hours which gives me an operating system - without a GUI. X, the GUI server, takes another 45 minutes, or so, to compile and install. KDE can be time consuming - it depends on what packages you install with it.

The end result is a machine tailored to YOUR exact needs!

As a caution, if you haven't worked with Linux before, you may want to try out other distros first, to get the feel of working with Linux - especially at the command prompt. A slash '/' missing from a device statemant (i.e. dev/sda3) or going the other way (the Redmond way c:\program files) can RUIN your whole day when you're trying to set up grub (the boot-loader). If you have some time give it a whirl - I gaurantee you will learn something about Linux!

Needs only 15 minutes if you only want the Gnome desktop.
