| I have an IOMega external CD drive, older unit only 4x. I would like to replace the drive inside the case with a newer, faster drive. I only see one fastener on the outside of the case, very small screw with hex-head. How can I obtain a picture or drawing that shows how to take the unit apart?
Thanks

| Most of those units are NOT user serviceable.
It's all a proprietary unit. Complete replacement would be the way to go.
Good Luck,

"User-serviceable"? WTF, over! You seem to be forgetting the whole premise behind these forums, Shadow. What we are about in here is fixing & upgrading gear that is, more often than not old, some would say obsolete. A corollary would be 'how to get functionality without having to spend the dough on new gear'.
In my case, i'm not even sure I would go out and buy a new unit if I DID have the bucks. My plan is to take this case apart and, as I said in my post, replace the old, slow drive with a newer, much faster unit. I want to be able to burn an image to optical media using the external USB burner.
In any event, I must admit I was just the teeniest bit miffed at your response - or lack of it. My skillset places me right up there in the stratosphere along with the likes of you, mister. User indeed! |

Hello,
Try removing the screw, as well as any other screws hidden behind stickers, plastic screw caps or LRFs. Try separating the case plastics and sliding the CD drive out of the case. If this does not work, try using a flat-blad jeweler's screwdriver, plastic TV tuner tool or Popsicle® stick to gently pry apart the locking tabs holding the case plastics. Be careful, as if you break them you may not be able to securely reassemble the case plastics.
