My webhosting service got hacked (again) and so I'm here wondering if anyone can recommend a reliable, cheap, hosting service for a small website.

And please don't say angeltowns (hacked twice in a month....I'm sick of this)

I've used Hostrocket for several business customers and even for my personal sites before I started using my own server. They aren't very expensive and offer lots of bang for the buck!

I have used 1and1.com for 2 years and have had a good experience. A web host that is physically near me is Highspeedweb.net. I have a friend that uses them and claims good reliability.

Also, a good resource to research web hosting is Webhostdir.com. I am sure there are many others.

I know there are tons out there, but the last time I went with my own thoughts on a service, I ended up with angeltowns, who's been hacked twice in the past month.

So...I was looking for advice. I'll look into these, thanks!

I would take a moment and look at Next Millennium Systems out of Orange County CA. I have been with them for a number of years and they always bend over backwards for me. They have awesome tech support and for newbies they will walk you through the stuff you don't know.

They offer free hosting for your own website if you are going to bring your clients to them. You can bring all or some of your clients or start from scratch and build your clientele up.
Anyway I am sure if call and you talk to them you will feel that they really care about your business and will go out of their way to help you in any area that you have a need.

I admit that this is a totally biased opinion but I have been around the block and I know that sometimes it takes someone like me to tell you from experience they these guys are worth investigating.

Wow! Thank you for sharing this resource. At first look, this appears to be the breath f fresh air I've been looking for. Will investigate.

How are their live web stats - a feature I really miss. My web host offered this for many years and has "cost cut" it away. After over six years with a web host, I'm ready for change - especially having moved into web designing for others.

Good Morning:

Will someone be good enough to explain what is meant by "hacked" and how does one tell if this has happened???

Who the heck knows, maybe I've been hacked and don't even know it.

Cheers

Hi Jack -

Basically, hacking a website means to gain unauthorised access to it (also called "cracking"). A hacker may write code which allows them to access & carry out changes to a site (such as appearance or adding/removing text), or worse still, to collect user logon details. A hacker may also add code which causes the site to divert to another site, such as a phishing site which appears to be identical.

A web security expert might be better placed than me to advise on how to check if your website has been hacked. I recommend that you visit your site regularly to check for unauthorised changes, and also check things as the site's last update time. If you edit your site on your own PC & then upload it, a regular comparison with the one online would also be a good practice.

Good Morning Seaeagle:

Thanks for your comments. I think I had better stop reading forums as I am starting to get paranoid.

I guess I would notice if anything like this happens as I frequently check back and external links but then again I can't imagine why anyone would want to mess with my site.

Thanks again.

Jack
